[REQUEST] QuickBooks 2018 Communication Issue

I'm betting it's a coincidence with Windows Updates which turns off public sharing in every feature update. QuickBooks multi-user keeps it files in the public user profile (public-documents-intuit-...) which Windows turns off sharing. Check your network sharing settings on the host machine.
 
The answer to that is to stop using public sharing... but that also means stop using HOME!

I setup a quickbooks user account on the QB server, and I use a login script to map a drive based on that login to the "server". This configuration has been in use since Windows 2000, it's always worked, it's never stopped working, and it's always a reboot away from fixing itself.

QB itself actually prefers you to use the UNC path to get to the file, because mapped drives are user context specific. UNC paths are not... however to make easy use of the UNC path you need a saved credential to access the resource. Mapping a drive with the appropriate credentials is a great way to give that to windows.

So I map a Q drive, and then don't use it.

I get calls for QB support only when customers want to upgrade the version. I've never really made money on support thanks to QB. And again, these practices have been in play longer than QB has had a "server" install.

But, I still think the OP has a bad patch cable. Physical movement means network issues? Replace the darned cable! It's cheap, and might save a bucket of time and frustration.

Great idea. I verified public sharing is turned on.
 
Based on all the suggestions made I performed a 45 minute continuous router ping, and it connected successfully each time. I then performed a 24 hour continuous ping to the Google server out of 81378 packets sent only 177 were lost. I'm assuming this is within an acceptable tolerance, and eliminates the Ethernet cable as the root cause. I also reviewed Event Viewer, and discovered the QB application logs an Event ID 4 when it aborts. The message states: An unexpected error has occurred in QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2018. DB error-308. Error message: 'Connection was terminated from file: 'src\sadbsess.cpp' at line 2063 from function: 'SADBSession::Internal Find'. A Google search of this Event ID 4 doesn't give me much to go on. If anybody has an thoughts please let me know. It's hard to believe this is all tied to a failed CPU fan. There is no other problems with this computer.

Absolutely nothing to do with "learning new things". There's really nothing "new" to learn about QB online.
It's the fact that many businesses utilize features that the desktop version of Quickbooks HAS...and the online version of Quickbooks does NOT have. Such as..payroll services, or certain reports, or...(a popular one)..integration with 3rd party apps they run their business on. The online version of QBs is "neutered"...certain features removed. Some businesses have run on, and rely on, those features.

As for accountants..yeah, think about how they run the accounting version, and how easy the import/export/import/export feature is with their clients. They run versions of QBs that can open QB company files made by many diffy versions of Quickbooks. That's mostly gone with online. So...they're stuck without a tool.
 
Funny because while this thread is going on... I do have an open ticket with Intuit.

Somehow one of my clients that uses QB Enterprise Contractor, got switched to QB Enterprise Accountant. The Intuit sales people can't seem to get their heads out of their carcasses no the issue, and I've been fighting them for a week now to get the proper license numbers.

This is the junk I deal with... QB itself is fine! It's the company behind it that's bonkers.

I appreciate differing points of view, and based on the feedback of several folks, I now better understand the complexities for accountants.
 
@frase, No Intuit product I've ever supported requires SMBv1.

And if you had an Intuit tech tell you they require it... you got a poorly trained one. You do not need that protocol, you haven't since XP died.
