Have a customer that does a lot of video graphics design and rendering work on a high-end machine (i7 860 2.8GHz, 8GB, Win 7 Ult). He's been having intermittent problems with the PC freezing, not booting at all, etc.

After other tests proved negative, I suspected that the video card (nVidia GeForce GT 220 w/ 1GB) was bad, so I installed a Radeon HD 5450 card I had laying around and it indeed resolved the problem.

The customer feels that the Radeon HD 5450 is not as good as the original card and he's willing to spend $200-250 for a "better" card.

I'm not that familiar with video card hardware so don't know what to recommend to replace the original card (it's PCI-express 2.0 x16). Have searched various vendor sites, but I'm overwhelmed by all the different models and types.

Anybody have a suggestion?

6850 is nice or even a 6870 but if u want NVIDIA then go with a 460...awesome card I installed several and no problems and if he's willing to go an extra mile get the 570. All are pretty much in the price range and will make the 220 look like **** lol ill post some really good links tomorrow when I get to work.

Sent from my Android Thunderbolt.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I looked up the costs of the cards and called the customer. Turns out his wife told him he couldn't spend over $200! So I picked up a GeForce GTX 460 with 1GB GDDR5 for about $150, which beats the pants off the Radeon HD 5450 that I had in there previously. The Cinebench OpenGL test recorded about 9 fps with the 5450, but the 460 was able to push out 36 fps.

Haven't told him yet that I had to replace the PSU to satisfy the power needs of the card!:)

I barely know video cards anymore, either. Between processors' naming scheme and video cards, I quit trying to keep up years ago. I usually just take a look at Tom's Hardware lists for whatever I want to compare.

good choice! The 460 1GB is a fantastic card, capable of playing basically all mainstream games at full detail, in full HD

Depending on your customers demands, have a look at the 2D performance of the latest generations of video cards. 3D power is nice for gamers, but for 2D CAD professionals the gaming cards are not the best choice.
I remember a few months ago i did a nvidia quadro fix for a customer. With this fix you can enable the 2D features for most nvidia cards.

google for nvidia quadro softmod for more info
