Ok had a client last week a retired professor. He knews enough about computers to have built his own. His issue is he recently pickup up a SSD drive and a pci controller for sata 3.0. He installed it fine loaded windows and all this programs. His issue now is that the dvd drives take forever to read when you put them in. I tested it i does take a long time to be able to open an .exe file off a cd(not for .doc or .pdf though). So he hired me to figure out the problem on site.
This is what i did:
- first uninstalled the drivers and rebooted. Let windows catch the drives and reinstall them Result: nothing fixed
-He had me look in the bois. He had changed the sata setting from ide to ahci. It was still happening after his adjustments so i restored bois to default settings
- Asked him when it first started happening(which i should have done first lol) Clients answer: When he added the controller and solid state hard drive
-After hearing that thought i must be something to do with the pci controller and the dvd drives.
-Removed pci controller and plugged the SSD into one of the open SATA slots on the motherboard. Booted up the computer and low and behold dvd drives work properly.
-He asked if a external usb dvd drive would work. I say i dont see why not. It operates on a different bus should be fine. Really just doesnt want to pay to find the real fix. which was fine onsite work can add up and we where coming to the end of the first hour. We settle up and i showed him a couple of good usb dvd burners in his price range.
I got a call today saying the usb drive is doing the same thing. Now this is where i need your help fellow nibblers. He is one of my furthest clients so i want to have the fix when i go out or at least a couple of good ideas. He needs a controller because his motherboard doesnt support sata 3.0. So does anyone have a fix to get the dvd burners to read at a regular rate.
the specs of the pc are impressive i7 3.0ghz sandybridge 8gbs of ram, 2 gig video card, 3 regular hard drives(mixed from old computers and before his ssd drive). No raid set up. Any help is greatly appreciated. Never liked working on whiteboxes
unless they are minelol. what a headache!
ooo yea a lot of his CDs are legacy pc games(flight sims mostly) but new dvds like office 2010 business are slow to read also. It seems to happen only with the installation files(setup and autorun).
