Had some free time so decided to scan some old backups (on 4.3 GB HDD's lol) from 1999 to 2002. Found a pile of "infections" in some old Outlook Express backups.
Win32.Worm.Klez.DAR (B) and Win32.Bugbear.A@mm (B) featured heavily!
I remember both of these back then.
I wonder why my AV didn't pick them up back then?
Maybe back then scanning email archives wasn't "a thing?"
Interesting reading old emails and documents, especially from computer parts stores I'd bought from!
OMG! 4.3 GB Maxtor HDD $475.95
Philips 2 x 2 speed CD-RW $659.95
Pioneer DVD Reader (not burner) CD-R/RW Combo $875.98
Pioneer DVD+ R/RW $1495.00!! (Wow, the last one I bought was a multiburner for $15.00!)
14" TEAC CRT Monitor $600.00
15" Sony CRT Monitor $795.00
Toshiba Notebook with Pentium 4, 64MB Ram, Windows 98SE, DVD Reader (not burner)
15" TFT Display $2759.95! ON SALE!
1mb Matrox Video card 249.95!
How the heck did we afford this stuff!
Curious to see what else I find. :)

Got a while to go so will be curious to see what else we find. :)

In my opinion those email scanners always ended up causing more trouble then they were worth, as soon as any attachment tried to execute it would have caught it anyway......well i'm talking the ones that actually scan the database file but the ones that check smtp transmissions thats kind of handy so you aren't infecting your friends.

Yah, I still remember the media hype when David L. Smith released Melissa! People were so naive back then!
The media talked about it as if it were an actual girl!
I used to get clients asking "how she broke in and used peoples computers!" Lol

IF you are old enough to remember.......

I can't recall the price but know it was mighty high - 30 pin, 4 GB (edit: megabyte) memory SIMM for at least $160.00 (or more) back when it was popular.
