Hi,
We have a hp proliant (tower) server at work with a cyber power ups. When it flips to ups power, the server turns off and shows an orange power light and makes a ticking noise. It is a brand new ups and the previous one did the same thing. I'm really lost and would really appreciate some help.

What model server? How many hard drives, how many processors (physical)
What size UPS?

First hunch is....too small of a UPS for that puppy if it's a decent model HP...like an ML350 or higher. I like to have APC 1500SU models on those as a minimum.

First off, Thanks for the answer. When is running on mains through the ups its fine, just when it changes to battery.
I believe it is 4 raid devices, 2 quad cores, 16gb ram, psu is 750w, the ups is upto 1300w. The Ups readout shows it should run for 51 mins on power.

What model cyberpower is it? I'm an APC fan, I know that some cheaper models may show enough VA capacity...but I've noticed they don't handle it well when you put a hungry server into them...so I stick with the APC models that are designed for servers. I've seen cyberpower units...but I don't sell them so I don't know their product lineup....but I just hit their website and took a look, I would select the OL1500RTXL2U model as the minimum one I'd get.

There is an issue with some of the HP power supplies and the cheaper standby/offline UPSs.
Even if the power rating is far greater than the power supply rating.
You need to use a line interactive UPS or better which do cost more.

Edit: looks like the model yeoldstonecat mentioned would do the job

Disregard YeOlde and cyabro explained what's going on. But I had the same problem with a Proliant 350 with a APC UPS RS1500 which worked for some time and eventually just stopped working. The weird thing is I replaced it with a newer RS1500 and it works now but I am certain it's only a matter of time before it stops working again. I'd go with the UPS that is made for those types of power supplies.

Yeah those models are just meant for longer runtimes on workstations. Servers will have too much draw and those won't do the job. I've taken on new clients whos prior IT people used those cheaper devices on servers..even though it's 1000 or 1500 model...those RB series aren't meant for servers. These peoples servers were occasionally rebooting out of the blue. I swapped them for a good server grade SU1500...problem gone!

The UPS is under rated it only supply 1320w. ML370 G6 barebone for 220V requires 1350w.

Great, at least i now have an answer! So if i just find one with about 1400w, that should do the trick?
Any opinions on this?

We often use the SU2200 models....our smaller setups typically have the SU1500....and larger ones to the 3000 model. 2200 in the middle.
As for the sub models and options for your outlet types...you'd have to confirm that, voltage outlet required, type of outlet for the plug (what we call NEMA type). There are different options for those.
