Skype's Been Hacked!

No, your wife just fell for the same phishing attempt that others fell for. Change her password to a unique password and turn on Two-Factor-Authentication.

I actually had a situation like this recently where a friend of mine was compromised and sending out links. He said he changed his skype password but it kept happening. I bet its the microsoft account login thats compromised.

It may probably a phishing attempt or probably a virus sent back from third party. If you are not hitting on any link or accept any files coming from other sources in your skype then I think you're fine. If your skype password has been compromised I think it's time to just change your security information.

From what I have seen very old Microsoft live logins that are simple names (before a full email address was required, back in the Hotmail days) are compromised. Affected user needs to edit their live account and disable the old login method and then change the password.

I get random messages like that from various skype users from time to time. As mentioned above, they are always cases of their hotmail accounts being hacked.

Her Skype account was brand new using a secure password I created and she didn't even know. I just created it last week because she had forgotten her old password after I re-installed Windows on her machine (I was too lazy to bother to do the password reset). About 30 seconds after I got a message from her, I verified that Skype wasn't even running on her machine at all.

IT WAS A BRAND NEW ACCOUNT USING A UNIQUE PASSWORD!!! ONE SHE DIDN'T EVER USE BEFORE!!!

I posted this as a warning that if you used a common password for Skype, it's probably been leaked.

The fact that I started getting several of these messages from different people I have on Skype all within a few hours of each other makes me think it's not that isolated.
