most of the problem is XP's inability to resolve IPv6 addresses so try this:

1. Simultaneously press Win+R on your keyboard and you should see a Run box.

2. Type this in the box %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc and click OK.

3. Open the hosts file with a text editor such as Notepad.

4. Copy the 2 lines below and paste it to the last line at the hosts file. Save the file.

or

open antivir, update it manually and point to the zip

AYS, thanks for the information.

That does lead me to wonder though why Avira AV would be looking for an IPv6 address. Is the issue that Avira is coded to look for the IPv6 address instead of the domain address? Why would IPv6 come into play at all?

I have read that while IPv6 was a great idea prior to Network Address Translation provided by routers -- since every computer had to have its own public IP address -- but now, it looks like we will not be running out of IPv4 addresses after all.

Also, when pinging personal.avira-update.com, 80.190.143.239 comes up right away. Would it be better to put that name and ip in the Hosts file?

What are your thoughts?

The free servers for Avira are hammered and it is a constant gripe on their forums, but it is Vista, Win7, XP, any of them...so I'm kinda confused how this helps and why it is specifically XP...elaborate please? Thanks.

I don't get it. Resolution of those domains is very quick and they are ipv4, so why do we need IPv6 entries ?. As tweak said, the problem is that the free servers are overloaded, not that the dns resolution is the issue.

I haven't recommended Avira (free version) in awhile due to this issue of not being able to get updates. Has it gotten any better?

I've been using Avira for some time now. At first, updates were nearly impossible to get.......but now I don't have any problem with the updates. As a matter of fact it just updated itself as I wrote this.

My wifes cpu (windows 7) and a customers (vista) sat forever for avira updates yesterday....my wifes i let go and left for awile, came back, nothing after 45 min.... I havent seen avira update quickly but a few times in the last few weeks.

Seeing as I see Avira on multiple systems daily I can say that without pattern the speed varies and sadly in almost all cases it is rather slow, sometimes even requiring nearly or more than an hour for what usually would take 5-20 seconds max. Great app but there servers are definitely being hammered at a rate that exceeds there capacity at the present.

Paid servers on the other hand do not suffer this problem, but we must consider it is free after all so we can't really complain too much.

True, but if they are having that much trouble keeping up they should just move to a paid version only like ESET. This would eliminate the hassle of keeping up with the free servers. Plus it might increase their sales for the paid version.

You know, Avira may just be throttling bandwidth for the free clients so that paid clients get faster response time. It may be their choice, rather than their servers being taxed.
