Dear all,

After SUMo (Technibble thread) i'm coming with a new security-related software called Startup Sentinel (SuS)

Startup Sentinel (a.k.a. SuS) makes your PC startup faster and more secure by giving you full control on loaded software. Every single program added to your startup sequence is detected on the fly and can be approved, rejected or blacklisted (for further automatic rejection by SuS)

This thread is to get your feedback and to provide support since this product is certainly very useful for your jobs !!

From the website:
"Blacklist of malware or unwanted software"
Why would you blacklist malware? Wouldn't you just remove it?
This is just a flashier version of msconfig, yes?

Blacklists make SuS automatically remove malware again if they are later installed again (this is the main "plus" wrt to msconfig which would require additional and periodic manual check to do this)

It will check with VirusTotal for malicious entries, but not blacklist or remove. But if I am running a tool like this, then I would be actually working on the machine so I wouldn't need those features.

Yes but AFAIK, Autoruns does none of these 2 operations.
Am i wrong ?

I think the point is that as technicians, we would remove the infection so it does not keep creating a startup item. It seems like it would be more useful if there is a program that you have to use that is an annoying PoS and keeps recreating annoying startup items. But I've never come across a problem like that yet that wasn't at least PUP.

but once you've identified stuff you want to remove forever, it helps you to do so automatically.
How does it "remove automatically?" That would make blacklisting redundant, yes?

But if malware was "autostarting" wouldn't it be more prudent to change settings in or change your Av scanner to something that worked to remove PUP's?
Programs like System Ninja and CCleaner can show all startup items, including hidden items.
Yes, these must be run manually but we still come back to your AV to handle removal in the first place.

I prefer Autoruns, much more detail.
Autoruns is much more comprehensive so would be my first choice.:)

The reality of malware is that the file names are always different. So I don't see that as helping much.

Yes, I was trying to come up with a theoretic reason to use it, but in reality anything it is used for should be dealt with by other means

This seems more an end user product than a tech tool.
To put a bandaid on the problem
