of its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

OK we all know this right? Well when your installation CD's got lost on your move from Hawai'i to Panama Central America and you have 2 OLD I mean OLD Dell 6000 Inspiron PC's running XP Home Edition 32 bit and you have successfully already gotten one up and running from using an external HD that just seemed to FIND what the computer BIOS needed by changing the BIOS to the ext. HD for a boot. THEN why won't that work on the same exact system again? No it won't. And again NO XP CD OR Install Discs now. Any ideas helpful as here are my options until I do a full rebuild of the 2 into 1.

1. Won't charge battery in unit.
Won't hold charge on battery in the unit.
Screen no longer stands up has to be propped up.
Neither one pad works have to use an ext. mouse.
This one IS the one I have up and running again from the same

#2 Computer

Does charge a battery
Does have sturdy screen that holds it's place
Neither one pad works have to use an ext. mouse.

Yep my hubby got the new Dell 17R over $1,200 16GB RAM 1.7 Quad 4 1 Terabyte HD and I got the remains. Still trying to keep em going until I can get my "new" one - not holding my breath.

Could love any advice as what I can do as I really NEED the combination of the two for even 1 decent working PC.

Many Thank you's to anyone out there, who still has these. Even could make me another install CD? I have a mainland US address now.

How are you running a licensed computer repair business without install media to fix even YOUR OWN computers?

Sounds like these are the same two personal (read: your own) computers that you posted about 4 months ago. If you misplaced your CDs, how could you not have replaced them yet ... you know, for your alleged computer repair business? That sort of thing would be a top priority for a repair professional. That's also notwithstanding the fact that the website you'd listed when you signed up here (since removed) was for breeding dogs.

It seems noteworthy that the only threads you've started (or even posted in at all) have been about fixing (again, note the emphasis) YOUR OWN computers.

Computer #1 We don't all know this right? Most of us have our installation media (in fact multiple copies of installation media for virtually everything).
Problem 1. Corrupt Registry
  1. Check the Hard Drive for physical errors (i.e. Seatools or something similar... Chkdsk is not really intended to check the surface - wrong tool) -bad HDD is pretty typically the root cause of the corruption of a registry hive.
  2. If drive is bad, replace it.
  3. Find your installation media, convince the vendor to send it, or buy it...
  4. Install OS, Drivers, Software, Updates, etc. (for your customer - Err yourself)

Problem 2. Battery Won't Charge
  1. If battery is bad, replace it.
  2. Problem could also be AC Adapter (charging brick), if bad replace it.
  3. Problem could be Motherboard not charging battery (check for BIOS update AND/OR replace Motherboard if needed)

Problem 3. Screen won't stay up
  1. Determine what plastic pieces (i.e. bezel, chassis, etc.) and hindges (or screws) are broken...
  2. Replace ANY structural broken parts.

Problem 4. Must use External Mouse
  1. Probably a 50/50 chance fixing #1 will fix this problem being it will have a whole new/clean OS install with drivers.
  2. Could be a bad driver - I have actually seen this before (on a Lenovo). Regardless, you might try the latest APoint (or whatever Dell has offered)
  3. Hint... Might try a differnet bootable OS (i.e. Linux Live Boot CD/USB or even the Windows Setup Utility) to see if the mouse works there (to rule out if problem is hardware/software)
  4. Hardware causes could be: disconnected/loose connector (reseat), bad touchpad (replace palmrest), or bad motherboard (replace board)

Computer #2

[See Suggestions for Fixing #1 and apply them... This computer should be "easier" to fix]

If I remember correctly you can still buy a XP disk from Dell for like $20 or so. Just call support and give them the service tag.

@Xander: Just interested - when you say "How are you running a licensed computer repair business..." - do you actually have to have some sort of licence to operate on your side of the pond? We don't .... I hope!

In New York you have to be able to count to 10 and not forget to put your pants on in the morning when you leave your house.

As you can imagine, there are A LOT of people running computer repair businesses here in New York.

In the US statutes vary by locality. Where I am one is supposed to register a business. Does not matter whether it is a sole proprietor or Incorporated. Sole props, also known as DBA's (doing business as a different name), have to pay a $50 in my city. But that is the only license if it is not open to the general public. If it's a store front then you need to get an occupancy license, etc, etc based on your business. But there is no license to be a computer repair business. And a huge number of people in my area are running under the radar so to speak.
