Have a customer in small business bought a Synology ds216j when they set it up they setup quickconnect when they told me this i told them it is not a good idea to be open to internet although all they use it for is photos and clipart.
Don't have much experience with Synology how do i turn off internet access and only allow local network traffic?.

QuickConnect is their remote tunnel/proxy access approach, it does not require any port forwarding on the firewall. Sorta like a VPN..almost. So as long as username/passwords are complex, and changed on a somewhat frequent basis, that's secure.

You can disable that in the settings.

Versus the web access method of remotely accessing files...done over 80 and/or 443. I only do 443. Of course, port forwarding is necessary here, exposing the NAS to the internet on those ports. Load a certificate on the Synology. Keep the Synology OS updated. There are many settings in the Synology to help secure that..such as, disable after X amount of failed logins. Keeps the grinding attacks down.

Synology has assorted Android apps on Android including "DS File" which looks like it should sync photos, etc. from phones to the NAS, but I haven't dug into it enough to know whether it's working through Synology's servers or going direct to the real-world address of the NAS and requiring punch-through. Probably worth reading up on that and related apps.

Dead stupid-simple way to remove internet access: Set it to a static IP address and leave the default gateway blank (or all 0s).

As for syncing files/folders. Do they want to sync or store them? Syncing them would be having a copy on both the PC and the NAS (effectively making a local-only 'cloud' backup) while storing them removes them from the PC making them only available when their connected to the local network.
