Just keeping an eye open for GUI utilities to migrate data from one server to another, keeping all NTFS info intact, data stamps, etc.

Gotta migrate a complicated file server and just feeling too lazy and feel like looking at icons representing source, 'n destination. Guess I'm feeling too lazy to Robocopy at the command line a few dozen times. //shrug :D

I know there's a GUI version of Robocopy but I ain't into it.

Traditionally used YCopy but that won't preserve info.

Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier?

Don't know if Unstoppable Copier retains security attributes. Nick used to use it in D7 a lot.

Last time I had to do something similar I used robocopy in batch files. I'd edit the batch, launch it, then save it with a new name. Then keep repeating as you correct the paths for additional copies. Surprising how few instances running would saturate a 1Gb link! :)

Would Cobian do this? Pretty sure it has the option to retain permissions & other stuff you're looking for.

I use Replicator (Karen's Power Tools) a lot for M$ environments because it's very simple and light weight. But I have never delved into whether it preserves all of the NTFS stuff.

I use open source free file sync http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/ . Option to retain NTFS permissions.

Gotta play with this one some more...caught my interest. Thanks.
(although on a few touchy directories I still whipped out robocopy).

Wanna play with this more 'n see how well it does changed/updated files. Like say you move it all yesterday. But a user or two went in after and touch a few files at the source...so you just want to breeze through and catch changed files.

If your planing to use the same backup system on the new server, why not do a restore from backup. At the time your testing the integrity of the backup system and limitation.

Then archive the backup media. In the event of disaster, you know you have a fall back backup media that has been tested.

Would be a good point...however switching backup systems, old server was on Intronis, new one on StorageCraft.

I did test their backup system last week however...user deleted a whole directory, had it back in 20 minutes.

Old server being retired...sent out to pasture.

This is exactly how I use the program. I add the new server a week ahead then sync up after hours.....big sync can take a while. Then when I'm ready for full switch over I just run it again and in 10 min it syncs everything that has changed. Big timesaver for me.

StoneCat, have a look at Multi Commander. Keeps folder and file date stamps intact. I've been through a few of these (one odd customer relates to his files by create date) and MC seems to be the easiest to deal with in that respect.

Fast, free (as in free beer), flexible. Just make sure you use the MC commands to copy/move.
