Every once in a while I get someone bringing in their Mac saying they want it checked for viruses because they think they have one. Currently, I just check activity monitor, do software updates, and tell them what is actually causing their problem. Do you think I should start doing a full virus scan if the customer really wants it? The way I understand it, apple blocks certain known malware, but if someone is one of the first to get something, then they have no protection. If you think I should start doing a scan, what tool would you recommend? We get people bringing in their computers with anti-virus programs on them, but a lot of them tend to cause problems.

I get this too. I do actually run full scans with either Sophos or ClamX. Usually whatever they find are downloaded Windows Variants pooled up harmlessly in the downloads folder. Lately, with all the issues with Java I've been going as far as uninstalling Java or recommending they uninstall it if they don't need it for anything.

I also run ClamX. About the only issues I find it address are attachments to emails. The JAVA issues you mention seem to be of more concern than anything. I install all the OSX patches and check the system directories recommended by apple for unauthorized entries. Occasionally a problem is simple as a secure website refusing to allow logins due to safari's popup blocker.
