Hello

I've currently got a hp laptop on my workbench, it came in with a failing hard drive, do recovered the documents. Installed a new hard drive, used the recovery dvds installed service pack. 1, & 2. When I try and run windows update to install the rest of the patches it fails saying the windows update service is not running start the service, restart your computer and try again. Tried this, ran wsus it also fails, ran SFC no problems, ran a Microsoft fix it all of which fail, I'm out of ideas, I have installed vista twice.

Instead of installing SP separately, which it sounds like you have done, have you tried doing all through WU maybe longer but try to see what changes? You don't say if it initially worked or if it stopped after SP installs.

Also tried WSUS?

Try D7 to fix WU and install default services? Have you checked for all services needed for WU to work? Esp BITS, I've had this service fail in past, look for dependencies

open an CMD with admin power.

do a "net stop bits"
then a "net stop wuauserv"
then a "net stop cryptsvc"

either may give an error, but thats ok.

do a "cd c:\windows\softwaredistribution"
(unless your drive is "d:" then of course do that)

MAKE SURE you are in the correct path above
then a "rd /s /q download"
then a "rd /s /q datastore"
TYPE THOSE IN, DO NOT DO A COPY AND PASTE, TOO RISKY

then do a "net start bits" and "net start wuauserv" and "net start cryptsvc"

watch for errors on those last three, they will be critical to
your next move.

if no errors then try windows update. Might not hurt to boot first, but thats up to you.

let us know what happens.

Ran this and there was no errors, tried to run WU and it failed.

So I ran a system restore to before I installed all SP1/2 and tried to run WU and it worked, then I ran WSUS and it installed the updates, when check WU and it failed so uninstalled all updates and now installing them all via the WU site, very odd, but I think i now have it working. just taking hours.

You were able to start the services like I noted and yet it failed with a "windows update service is not running" ? Did you go into SERVICES and see what was stopped ?

Yeah all the services where running before I ran the steps and once finished they all started ok, but eu still failed. I'll update a screen shot tomorrow, it's now working in would just like to work out why for next time.

Update fail after hdd change......

Hi,

Had the same issue after replacing an hdd and trying to update Vista...
error 0xc8000247

Blabla Service not running, but it was !!

Needed to install the Intel Rapid Storage driver, then it worked.

Just a tip.

Greetings Frans

Did you ever get this fixed? I'm running into the same issue. I've also found that with UAC turned on, windows no longer recognizes it's own built-in apps like cmd, mmc and msconfig. It prompts saying something about it doesn't recognize where they came from.

Only thing I found was when I installed the updates via WSUS offline the error happened, when I did all updates via windows updates it worked, I'm guessing wsus corrupted something
