Why does windows XP pro SP2 only see 1.75GB of my 2GB ram? Also is 46C too high temp?

I just built a new system I checked the temp on the bios and it was running at 45-46c? that kinda sucks right? it is a stock am2 fan, it has nice copper tubing and i have heard great reviews from this fan its the one that comes with the AMD athlon x2 6000+ 3.10GHz processor.

I have two sticks of ddr2 800mhz OCZ reaper ram, 1GB per stick so 2gb tottal but under system properties it only sees 1.75GB. What gives?

Here is an update, I did a bit of overclocking not much i went from 200MHz to 210 MHz and now I am at 3.25Ghz, Then I upped my fan speed voltage from 250 to 252 with 255 being the max, and now my rig is running at 43-44c is this crappy temperature? Ram still being seen as 1.75Gb instead of 2gb. Whats up with that?

Here are my specs

Mobo: XFX 750A
CPU: AMD athlon 64 6000+ 3.10GHz Stock (Running at 3.25) Stock Heavy Duty Fan.
Ram: DDR2 800Mhz OCZ Reaper Series 1GB x2
PSU: Antec 1000watt Modular ESP12v
O/S: Windows XP SP3
HDD: Sata 320 GB
Case: Apevia X-Alien 6 fans, 2 intake fans in the front,2 exhaust fans in the back, 1 blow hole with fan on top, 1 blow hole with fan on the clear sided door.

No video card? Using the integrated graphics? It takes up 256mb of your ram for video ram.

And, yeah...if you're getting 43-44C in the BIOS, that is pretty hot. I don't think it's too hot for the processor to run stable, but I'd be concerned with the temperature under a load. Have you tried running a stress test and measuring the temperature during?

I have not ran a stress test, how would I do that what type of software is used? Do you have any links to some good software to do that?

Yeah intergrated video card is taking up the missing ram.

Also 40c+ is little too high, but not extreme, a cpu should be ok to run stable to at least 60c. My OCed E8400 (3.75ghz) runs idle @ 31c with zalman9300 coolling fan.

I would consider upgrading your CPU heatsink and fan as from what you said it sounds like you are using the stock cooler which for its cost, FREE!!!, it is nice but it is not designed for over clocking.

I bought some thermal compound 99.9% silver its called arctic silver 5 so I'm going to try and see what happends. Shold I remove current compound or just add more to the fan? Also how much compound is needed?

I removed stock compound and added arctic silver compound and my system was at idle doing 42-43C wich is better than the origional 44-45-46c and im running HeavyLoad now but how long does it run for its been running for atleast 5 minutes now.

It runs indefinately you have to terminate it when you feel its run its course which for me I do 3 hours some people do 24 hours. I will run the PC for 24 hours but things like Heavy Load just for 3 hours. I am glad you removed old compound as you never want to add to existing compound.

45 C is a little funky for idle speed, but based on some really quick research it seems that your chip's limit according to AMD is 63C for the 125W chip.
(55C if you have the 89W chip).

Idling at those temps is fine. I doubt it has an impact on efficiency, and don;t worry about a cpu lasting enough time...by the time that thing dies, it will be in a museum.

What really matters is what your temps are at load. That's what counts. If it ever passes 63C during testing, I would stop it - because then you may do some damage if you let it go on for long.

If you want to lower the temps just for satisfaction or peace of mind, go ahead and purchase a new HSF.
If you plan on overclocking, you will need a more expensive one.

Also, AS5 I hear needs some time to 'settle' so you might see and additional 1 or 2 degrees reduction, eventually.

these temps seem fine to me. what is the ambient temp of the room u are in? as long as the cpu isnt going over 60 it should be okay. a good guidline for me is if the pc is stabe its generaly not overheating :P
