Got a brand new Acer laptop from Amazon. Seemed to be an amazing computer for the money but of course it comes with this stupid S-mode. Cannot get it into windows 10 home no matter what. I've tried basically everything on the web I can find through google searching. NOTHING works for me. Tried the WSreset command etc.

Unfortunately cannot do the powershell recommendation because you can't get to it in S mode. Just checking to see if anyone has had any luck with anything? I'm basically going to send this POS back Monday if I can't get it. I've spent over 4 hours messing with things reinstalling etc. I've done all the store updates and 10 updates. I cannot seem to get the windows update to pickup the latest 2004 one though no matter how many times I try to "check for updates"

Returns on computers (crappy ones) have to be at an all time high right now lol. A normal person would never try all this stuff just to be able to use the stupid thing.

Just get the "Try that again something happened on our end waiting for a bit might help."

Thanks in advance.

Does an S-Mode license allow the upgrade for a N&P? I've had a few S-Mode machines but they always upgraded fine within Windows.
I have not had the chance to test but it should work. Originally, S mode was a different media. But now any Copy of Windows 10 Professional can be installed in S mode by using an unattend file. That implies that its the same license. Oem vendors probably get a discount if they commit to do so.

Unless something's changed, you can "upgrade" S-Mode in to standard Windows 10 Pro with little effort.

There are myriad discussions about this available via web search. It was discussed at length on several blind technology groups when S-Mode came out because you cannot install a screen reader (or couldn't then, because there were none as universal apps in the play store, and having only Narrator is not generally a good option).

Here's one post regarding that: https://win10.groups.io/g/win10/message/44693?p=,,,20,0,0,0::Created,,S+Mode+pro,20,2,0,74081552
and if you review that topic as a whole, or search for others, there are many mentions of getting out of S-Mode and into regular Windows. Once you do, you can't go back, but who would want to?

It's easy to get out of S Mode. Here is how I did it.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Menu
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click Updates and Security
  4. Click Activation
  5. Look for "Switch to Windows 10 Home" (or pro depending on your version)
  6. Click "Go to The Store" (Don't click on the one under "Upgrade" if it's there)
  7. On the "Switch out of S Mode" screen click "Get"
  8. Follow the prompts and you will get a confirmation.
  9. If you got the confirmation you are out of S-Mode.

Try that and every time just get the same error. I think this has been a problem on and off for several years now. I thought I finally had it, i installed a super old version of windows 10 and it was "windows 10 home" Once I updated to the latest using the upgrade assistant, it went back into S mode again. I'm convinced there's nothing that can be done when this silly MS store doesn't function right.

I was even going to just buy the pro version for $99 and call it a day with it...can't even do that. When I click buy it will load up a screen and then the same error comes up about "try again something happened on our end"

Yeah, I've tried nuke and pave within the machine, then tried latest version of 10 through USB, and then tried an old version of 10 which worked to start, but then as soon as I did all the updates it goes back to S-mode. It's like the store is broken for that or something...terrible there's no easy way around it that I can see.

Then call Microsoft. You are supposed to be able to exit S-Mode if you so choose, and if that's not happening it's a bug that they need to help you get around, and at no charge.

The advice you've been given here is accurate, it's just not working for you for some unknown reason.

Yep going to try that now

I've never used an MS Account, the store doesn't require one either. I just get the free app, run it, and it works.

I will try it on the next one I get. The last time I had to set up an account for the client as they did not have one in the past.

The store will make you think you need to, it complains and pops up... but if you keep trying you'll eventually get into the store without logging in.

It's like the stupid dance you have to do to setup Windows 10 Home from scratch without a MS login... The path is there, but they try to hide it.
