Well I check on my system later and it said that I don't qualify because my Nvidia card is not compatible. I shut down remove the card and use the internal Intel grpahics card and now the GWX icon is gone. I think Microsoft just crossed my machine off the list.

Damn that's crap. Did you check if Nvidia came out with a new driver update? Actually got an update on my driver yesterday for my Nvidia card.

I put an SSD into an Asus laptop that came with windows 8.1, installed a fresh copy of 8.1 and am still doing updates, but haven't yet seen any sign of an option to get Windows 10.

I had that same issue with a laptop that I upgraded to 8.1 last week. I waited and waited for the Windows 10 to show up and nothing.

When the automatic updates are enabled, launch Command Prompt as an Administrator, and perform the following steps:

  • Click Start -> All Programmes, then click Accessories.
  • Right-click Command prompt then click Run as administrator.
  • When the User Account Control dialogue box appears, confirm the action the clickContinue.
Alternate method:

  • Click Start.
  • In the Start Search box, type cmd then press CTRL + Shift + Enter.
  • If the User Account Control dialogue box appears, confirm the action then click Continue.
Once you are presented with the Command Prompt, enter the following command:

  • Wuauclt.exe/updatenow
Performing the above will trigger the Windows 10 download.

That the same instructions that my article mentions and so far hasn't worked. I'm gonna just manually install it with the Media tool. Tenforums has a step by step instructions that show the GWX method so I've seen screenshots of the process so that at least I know what it looks like now which is what I was wanting to see.

If you manually install KB3035583 on a fresh machine that should be the thing that installs the GWX and then starts the whole Windows 10 upgrade thingy.

Yep. But not here. The program IS on the machine. I did have an icon, my reservation was accepted. Then it told me I wasn't compatible after I was told I was and the icon vanished, the message in Windows update about Windows 10 is gone. It's an old Core 2. It may NOT be compatible.

What about running that live tool that was in the other thread ? You download this little installer and it then offers to upgrade your machine or build an ISO for another machine install.

I'm finding if you download the Windows 10 media creation tool and run that, select upgrade now and it allows you to install. I've done this on a few machines with no trouble.

Reminds me of what being a tech is all about.

Nothing is straight forward and only we have the patients overcome the stupid hurdles that computers throw at everyone.

I just got my first machine with dead hard drive.

I am in the midst of getting back to Windows 10.
  1. I have installed their original Windows 8 and activated it.
  2. Then upgraded through windows store to Windows 8.1.
  3. After that I expected to see the windows 10 upgrade logo (nope).
  4. I have installed all the updates for 8.1 + run the Wuauclt.exe/updatenow as adminstrator and restarted the machine but no luck.
  5. Now I am downloading from Microsoft the Windows 10 ISO, I hope this is the ISO that is going to do the upgrade coz 3.XXGB from a throttled microsoft download server is a long wait, especially when you've had to do the Win8 install and then the 8.1 download and then upgrade.
It's all well and good that this little icon appears when Microsoft gets around to it, but as techs it is pretty ruddy frustrating we don't have 2 weeks.

I am thinking we all need to probably charge customers extra money for the time it takes to go from Win8 to Win8.1 to Win10 that is 3 computer setups Microsoft!.
