Just had a nuke and pave to do. Installed a new SSD in a laptop. System has an i3, 275gb ssd(now), as well as 4gb of ram. With the new ssd, it's quite quick. Did the reinstall, no big issues with a stock windows 7 dvd with SP1 integrated. But Windows is stuck on checking for updates.

Tried the following

Turn Windows updates off.
Installed IE 11, Installed the new Windows Update Client, I also installed the October rollup as well.
Followed through this thread, installing the updates it allowed me to install.

Followed through a couple of threads here on TN as well, put in multiple patches manually, still no joy. The machine will sit for hours at a time, no sign of pulling any updates down. Unfortunately I'm not in front of it. It's been attempting to check for updates for over 8 hours by now, so I'm hoping that maybe it's found something. I get that Microsoft wants to sell new software, but this whole deal about having a harder time updating windows 7 just because it's older is annoying imo.

Forgot to mention, I have also run the Windows 7 update fixit tool, which gave it an error on.

Someone else who's a tech guy that I respect just sent me this link which if I don't get any joy when I get back to look at the system, I'm going to nuke and pave this system again and follow it from the letter.

Before I left the system to run today while I was working on things today, I did run the Windows 7 System Update Readiness tool(that may not be the proper name).

Just an update. The last link worked like a charm. I checked into that, and one of the updates I'd already loaded. I loaded the other update and rebooted, and it found the updates within about 5 minutes.

Good! Now remember this for the next time you come upon it (I'm sure you will).

I've used NTLite (registered version) to create custom Win 7 Pro 64-bit unattended install images which contain the updates up to the October 2016 rollup. Luckily for me, they all seem to work ok on my VM's and a Dell Optiplex 780 I use for testing. I've also incorporated open-source software titles into my custom installers. And I've also been successful with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.
