Wordpress site backup

I've only recently started using Wordpress on a couple of sites here, and generally it's been positive, particularly where the content has to be managed by others with no coding experience. However, I'm beginning to wonder about backup, and if ever required, how to move the whole thing to another hosting provider. I've Googled and there are dozens of plug-ins that address some or even all of the problem, but as usual it's impossible to tell whether any of them are any good. Wordpress seems to be pretty widely used here, so does anyone have any advice or real experience to share about backups?

Thanks in advance,

Neil

The only thing you should need for backup or transfer is the database, which I get using a plugin called wp db backup, and the wp-content folder.

I agree with Ten Yard Fight, you need to backup your database and wp-content using a plugin or some file transfer software like filezilla client..

Vaultpress.com offers real time backup when changes are made (both database wide and nightly via ftp), automated security scans (yes - WP CAN get infected.), and one click restores. It costs a monthly payment, but if you are running a mission critical site then I would highly suggest it.

As I've said, I'm working on a "shop admin" panel right now that utilizes wordpress to track orders, jobs, customers, invoicing, etc. Something like that, or even a heavily used wordpress install would greatly benefit from this service.

Vaultpress looks good, but $15 per site is not an option for the personal and hobby sites I have in mind. Was looking for utility or add-in I could just buy once - thanks for the info though.

I use the BackWPup plugin. Works well it backs up to a local directory on your server and also allows backup to google storage (free what I'm using), dropbox, surgarsync, ftp, azure, rackspace, and even email if it will be under a specific size. I set mine up to run once a week. Once set up I really don't do much with it. It just works.

dagint: thanks - this was one I looked at briefly, but hearing that you have used it and it works merits a closer look.

Just a note, if your website is all WP then something like Vaultpress will probably work fine, however if you incorporated a WP blog into a website you should really check with the VP people because its not likely that the non-WP portions will be backed up.

We host hundreds of sites, some are all WP and others have WP as part of their website. Each requires its own backup/restore method.

NYJimbo: So far they are just WP with plug-ins for photographic galleries, but who knows what may happen or need to be added in future, so thanks for the warning.
