Found this last night as I had somehow forgotten the password on a D610 I recently resurrected. The link covers W7. But the same process works on W8 and W10. Of course the same caveats apply, resetting passwords will block access to encrypted files/folders, etc, etc.

It uses a process we have seen where we take a certain KB/OS mapped function and replace it with another. In this case the Sticky Key function (hit the shift key 5 times) sethc.exe with cmd.exe. After rebooting you hit the shift 5 times. Since sethc.exe has been replaced with cmd.exe it opens a CLI for you to play with. But it does require a bootable installation that is compatible.

I have used sometimes utilman.exe instead of sethc.exe. This is a method every good tech should know by heart, and always use a recovery CD/USB instead of the recovery partition. Using the recovery partition will ask you for the password.

Hi, thanks for the post, any way to recover the password if the login in windows 8.1 or 10 with the email id instead of local account?

You cannot recover the password but you can still gain access to the machine. Seem to remember the process is similar. But when you get to the CLI you use net user to add a new account with admin credentials. But remember that if encryption got turned on the old accounts will not be accessible.

For customers unable to logon to Win 8/10 because they forgot the password for their MS accounts, go to another PC and go to http://login.live.com then follow the "I forgot my password" scenario. When the password's been changed, then re-signon to Win 8/10 using the new password and all will be well. Done it twice in just the last two weeks.

Nice. I use to use HirensBoot tool, but when a system is UEFI, I cannot boot from the CD and remove it.
I will test this.
Thanks

I didn't even know that option existed. good one but it needs to be fixed back once used. Now with the sticky keys...(sethc.exe) Who uses them anyway?
Free Kon Boot works with win 7 and earlier, paid Kon Boot with win8 local and online, win 10 with local only. $75 for commercial license.

Yes, that is a great point about remembering to undo what has been done.
