So I lurk a lot here, but haven't posted much. I also ramble when I do post, so bear with me.

I am now 16 months into owning a computer repair shop. It is my first business, and it has been a frightening, exhilarating, insomnia inducing experience.

We have been (are) a break/fix shop. 90% of our business is house calls and walk ins (e.g. terrifyingly random). 9% business support (hourly on site... also random). 1% training (we offer classes and 1 on 1 training). We don't at this time provide any server support. I managed a server years ago, but I am hesitant to take someone else's business into my hands at the moment.

We grew very quickly in our first year, so much so that I think we may be approaching a glass ceiling on the break/fix stuff. I recently saw a recommendation here for the book "Managed Services in a Month" by Karl Palachuk. I was disturbed that there wasn't a kindle version, but bought it anyway. It's been sitting at home for a few weeks unread. I left my iPad at the office today, and decided to flip through the book while sitting in bed. I ended up reading the entire book cover to cover. Now I can't sleep because I am energized and full of ideas.

One of the lines that really smacked me in the face was (paraphrasing) "There are people who invest in their technology, and those that begrudgingly spend money on it only when they have to". Almost all of our business right now comes from the latter.

Anyway, the point of this entire thread is that I freaking love this site. I came here a few months back, frustrated with all the paper I was generating and was turned onto mhelpdesk which has made a huge difference in how the business is run. I then saw a recommendation for a book that is now responsible for me staying up all night thinking about the direction and strategy of my business (in the best way possible). After reading the book, I wanted a good tool for managed services that would work for a lot of the small businesses here that don't have/need servers and found GFI mentioned here (a lot). And you don't want me going in to the hundreds of "little" tips, software, etc, I have found of value here.

So keep up the good work. I might not post but once a month, but you guys are creating positive change in my business in a massive way.

TLDR; :D

I agree it is a great place. What a great resource with positive role models. I thought we were running at the top of our game till I spent time on the forums. We used to compare ourselves to our crappy competition. Now we compare ourselves to people doing things better than us. The businesses here have helped bring out our best. We do things completely different today.
