CamStudio Portable – Record Everything On Screen

Shares

Camstudio Portable is a small, free and portable application designed for recording what is happening on the screen including any mouse movements. While this isn’t exactly a “repair tool”, its highly useful when you are teaching a client how to do certain task and want them to remember the steps after you leave. I personally like it because I don’t have to write the steps down for my clients and show them multiple times. The clients like it because they can refer to it any time if they forget the steps.

The application has the ability to record the entire screen, a region where you specify the size and can move itabout, or a fixed region. It also has the ability to highlight the cursor in the recordings so the client can see the cursor in the video better. By default, the application will export the video to .AVI but you can also convert the video from AVI to SWF (Adobe Flash) so the file is much smaller but still maintains its video quality.

If you teach clients how to do certain tasks on the computer (getting photos off cameras, putting music on portable devices etc.) then this is a must have.

Note: The official version on the Camstudio.org site is NOT portable. The version linked in this download is a modified portable version.

cool little program. I tested w/ all kinds of compression.
    1. microsoft video produces 28mb or the biggest size.
    2. indio video 5.10 came in 2nd = 18mb
    3. cinepak didn’t work. error in encoding.
    4. xvid didn’t work.
    5. ffshow codec produces only a black screen.
    6. intel indio 4.5 produces 4.5 mb but video was lagging.
    7. intel IYUV didn’t work either. error in encoding.
    8. Best was techsmith, which produces 4 – 8mb. Even recording full screen produces 8mb for less than 30sec.
One thing I noticed is that with techsmith, the video was very fast. If you move your cursor quickly from one place to the other, it the audience will not be able to see where the cursor is going. It’s like disappearing and then re-appearing. I had to move my cursor slowly so that during the recording, it doesn’t look too fast for the viewer.

I’ll try out the portable version. I’ve used the desktop version for quite some time successfully.

These settings seem to do pretty well in CamStudio’s desktop version, so I suggest trying them in the portable version as well.

Create your source video only using a region as large as you need
    don’t automatically use full screen.

Use the MSU Screen Capture Lossless Codec as it creates smaller files
than the Techsmith Screen Capture Codec
    http://www.compression.ru/video/ls-codec/screen_capture_codec_en.html

    Video Options: Quality: 100%
    Keyframes Every: 100 frames
    Capture Frames Every: 100 milliseconds
    Playback Rate: 10 frames/second

Audio Options For Microphone: PCM, 44KHz, 16Bit Mono
(don’t drop down to 22KHz as that’s when audio/video desynch happens)

When creating the SWF, I set the Playback and Keyframe Rate to
10 frames/sec with audio compression set to ADPCM …

    Color mode: 16 bit

I have used this program for a long time as a resource to sale tutoring services. It very simple to use and it’s open source. I wish it was also available for Linux.

I use this for friends and family. I haven’t used it for a client, but I’ve been thinking strongly about it.

Cool tool, I’ll be using it.

I can see it will be handy to show my forgetful 80 year old dad how to burn CD’s.
