Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack – Allow Office 2003 To Open Office 2007 Files

Ok, this one isnt exactly a repair tool, but it is very useful to have this in your kit. As some of you may already know, the new Microsoft Office 2007 no longer uses the .doc format for documents. By default, it now uses a new extention called .docx.

Saving in the new format isnt a problem if you actually have Office 2007, but when people using older copies of Office try and open a .docx file, they cant. The Office 2007 compatibility pack allows those with older versions to open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

    Amen on that extention!

The only thing that I found that isn’t great with this is that it takes a while to convert and it’s frozen a few times on me.

  • Personally I mad by Microsoft Office 2007 and yes, thanks to the new extention as well. Step behind in my opinion. So i guess this one will be quite usefull.

  • Isn’t MS a wonderful company how they change things in small increments to ensure their own dominance in the marketplace. Now what do software developers have to do to get the new MS compatibility into their existing programs? Is .docx an improvement or a market control feature?

This utility is great particularly for any business clients you may have. I will also say that if you research docx the idea behind it, though no telling of the true intent, is a great step foward as it is a more open format. The problems people primarly have with Office 2007 is that the tool bar has changed to the ribbon and it means that they must learn a new way of getting to everything. I will say the bottom line at this moment it is not a step back and while the ribbon to me is niether a step forward or back the docx format does show potential to be a step forward.

Now just to remind after my rant this utility is great and a must for business clients.

I have been installing this as a default for HOSO businesses for some months now.

I have Office 2007, and IMO I think it’s great, once you figure out the ribbon’s, I have a little addon that changes the ribbon to that of office 2003, which makes the job much easier at times. I also have the “save as PDF” addon which was a free download from the MS site.

On a final note I also install Power point Viewer for those that request it.

I have had some files take a few minutes to convert but never frozen on me.

  • No freezes for me either, I still see lots of Office 2003 and earlier so this is invaluable.

It is annoying to have to install something new and re-learn it. Last summer I would get attachments that I couldn’t open with my older version of Office, which was more annoying.

  • Anton says:

This is a greate tool wich will rise the popularity of Microsoft Office 2007.
