ProduKey is a portable free application designed to show you the product keys of Microsoft operating systems and popular software like Microsoft Office, Exchange Server and SQL Server. This feature is handy but we have seen similar functionality in old repair tools of the week like Magical Jellybean Key Finder. However, Produkey has a nice feature for us computer technicians. It has the ability to get the keys off another harddrive or even from another computer over the network.
Imagine this situation. A client brings in a computer that has a copy of Windows XP on it that isnt booting. You determine that some critical Windows files are corrupt and it needs a format. However, the client lost their disk and the license key.
No problems. Install their harddrive into one of your systems, fire up ProduKey and point it to the second hard drive and wham bam, you have their Windows license key.

The magic jelly bean will load keys off of another drive as well. The feature is on the tools menu.
“Gangsta”
Works great, but many times when I plug my drive into a clients computer, their anti-virus detects and quarantines it. Apparently most anti-virus programs detect it as a hack-tool for obvious reasons. I lieu of writing all my tools to a CD (they change too often), I just keep a copy in a password protected zip folder so I can replace it…
Like Paul mentions above, Symantec barks about this file. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-120623-4720-99
Yea, like Paul and Chad says, Symantec also zaps it off my USB drive.
Also, Dan is right, I’ve used jelly bean to do that as well.
many thanks, will be very useful
Symantec doesn’t like anything that is useful becuase it likes to make things useless
I have been using ProduKey for some time. Very useful program for getting a key off a slaved drive.
I have been using System Information for Windows which is on the Ultimate Boot CD. It also works great when booting from the CD. No need to slave a drive.
So if the client doesn’t have the CD or the actual software. how do you get the client to prove the software is not pirated. If the software was originally pirated, you now become liable for installing pirated software and are welcoming any issues that arise from that.
Nice tool. It would be very handy in the situation you described in the article.
I like Belarc. It has as much info about a computers system as you could need to know. If you’re looking for an exquisitely detailed audit of your hardware, this is the download you need–no other hardware utility comes close. It starts with the basics, such as the computer manufacturer, installed RAM, hard-disk size, and processor type and speed. But it also shows you the motherboard maker, hard-disk manufacturer, chassis serial number, PC service tag, bus type and speed, multimedia devices…the list goes on and on. You’ll also find details about your Windows installation, including which security hotfixes you’ve installed and which you’re missing, plus a list of all user accounts on your PC and a lot more. And also keys might I mention. Most of this was copied and pasted. I have no interest or connection with the company
