Induction

And last but not least, once you have your insurance, you’ve bought them a desk and taken all the razor blades and sulphuric acid home out of harm’s way, how will your employee know what their job is and how to do it? You’re going to have to do some sort of introduction for them, and get them used to it. Sometimes in this situation, especially if you’re new to the game of being an employer, you might find the new role is quite ‘open’ (i.e. you’ve not really much idea what your new bod is supposed to do), and, in this situation, it’s OK to be honest about this and to agree to develop the job between you. As a minimum, an induction for a new member of staff should include the following:

Who you are and what your business does (they weren’t listening during the interview, trust me).
What the terms of the job are, and the conditions of work, such as working hours, holidays, break times, finishing time etc.
Any Health and Safety aspects (how to get out in a fire, security etc), as required by your country/industry.
How to let you know if there’s anything they aren’t sure of.
The rules (start as you mean to go on).
Where the facilities are.
Any other things you think are important.

Allow your new bod half a day to process this information, and give them a chance to settle in…and you never know, it might be easier than you thought!
