Top Twitterers for Techs

Just as RSS feeds are a great way to keep up on Tech news, Twitter is another way to keep up to date with Tech news, reviews, and stories in the technology industry. As a Tech, though, why bother with Twitter? There are several reasons.

First, it’s real time insight into current trends, top news stories and reviews on new gadgets, hot deals on software, hardware, and useful tips for the tech industry, delivered right to your smartphone, your tablet, or your work PC. You can often get first pick on special deals tweeted by suppliers, if you keep an eye on their tweets. Are you getting ready to pull out the sledgehammer instead as the ultimate tool for your latest repair job? Post a tweet, maybe someone else has a solution, and it saved you an hour or two, or three, of searching the archives for what you needed.

If you want more reasons to use Twitter, consider the fact that it creates a business social network around you. Retweet tips that you find useful, and before you know it, the author of the original tweet may be following you and retweeting your tweets, and you’ll end up with more followers, which not only increases your business exposure, but increases the chance someone will recommend your services because they heard about you from someone in their network that they trust.

One final reason to use Twitter, before I get into the actual list, is the fact that even the simplest mobile phones of today can be set up to receive and send tweets, which means you can get everything on the go, in short little 140 character tweets, whereas you probably prefer to have a larger screen to catch up with your RSS feeds. It’s easier to get Twitter notifications of great articles, and either ignore the ones you don’t find interesting, and click the ones you do, rather than sort through a hundred or more RSS feeds at the end of the day. Of course, your preference might be different, and everyone’s method is different on the road to efficiency.

A word of caution is in order, though. Moderation is the key. With Twitter accounts and RSS feeds, you can subscribe to and follow so many that you’ll end up reading a lot more than you had planned, and it can cut into your schedule if you’re not careful. It’s best to focus on what really suits your needs rather than just subscribing to every single technology news feed and sorting through thousands of articles every day.

It’s the same with Twitter. If you mass subscribe to every Tech in the business, you’ll spend all your time reading and have no time to work. I’ve compiled a list of great Twitter accounts to follow in the Tech industry, but again, they’re just suggestions. If you don’t work with Linux at all in your field, you probably won’t follow Ubuntu, but if you have clients who use it and are always looking for new tips and tricks, it’s a great way to learn about new open source software. On the other hand, perhaps you swear by AVG instead of Kaspersky or MSE, so you might follow that account instead.

You’ll recognize some of these names from the recent article on RSS feeds for Techs, and perhaps some new accounts that you hadn’t seen before. Some official company accounts were retired or renamed, and that may account for some differences, so if later you don’t find an existing account mentioned below, search Twitter for a similar named account, and you should be able to find what you’re looking for.
