Accounts : Excel spreadsheet request.

Hi.
My accounts are, frankly, shocking. Abysmal even.

It's the same every year, and I admit it's mostly down to discipline (or lack of, to be more accurate.)

I have PCRT, which has helped enormously, but I need an excel spreadsheet format in which to record the rest.

Particularly the column categories.

A Quickbooks purchase was an embarrassing failure.

It's the format which has me confused. Accounts are just not my thing. And my accountant just prefers a simple spreadsheet.

Q. Can someone post an example of an excel spreadsheet that they successfully use. So I can leech it. Obviously without the data, as I'm sure that would upset me.

Love.

I use PCRT but not for accounting. I simply use a spreadsheet to record each transaction, then add up the total at the end of the financial year. I then deduct the valid expenses from it. It works very well, the only complicated bit is the car.

Rob are you still a LTD company if so I think it is a bit more complex due to companies house been involved.

Cheers JoyD. I'm in the process to moving from Ltd. To a sole trader, which is a major headache in itself.

Thanks Ian.

Thanks for the media Nige. Outstanding. [emoji2]

Yes it would be great to have something linked to PCRT but there really isn't anything. I use PCRT for my invoicing then put the monthly sales figures into an Excel sheet(same as Nige uses) along with all the other costs. From that I have my figures for HMRC.

I hear you about Quickbooks because I felt exactly the same till I got my accountant to set it up for me. If the setup is done right, it's easy to use. Well, a LOT easier to use, let's say that. It's just such a big program with so many possibilities that it's easy to get mired. If it's set up with fewer options, just the ones you need, then it's easy to use. Our software integrates with Quickbooks because it's the standard in the accounting industry. The spreadsheet might work for you, but particularly if your company is growing or the accounting is getting more complex because of new business avenues, etc, it might be worth paying your accountant to configure Quickbooks for you and show you how to use it for your business. Could save you a lot over a year, both time and money.

have to agree. i have a friend who is a bookkeeper. we sat down and she showed me how to use QuickBooks, we set up the accounts i need, we ran through the major scenarios and she showed me the procedures. that was enough to get me started and get in the mindset of the software so it's pretty straight forward now. i've rung her on the odd occasion or i've googled and have been able to work out what i need. it's worth the investment in time to have the kind of output it delivers. at tax time my accountant says just do a QuickBooks backup to a thumb drive and give it to me. sweet!

Rob, I use Mhelpdesk for day to day tracking of jobs, tickets, invoicing that is due. I also keep a worksheet (since 2007!) on every job, money in, what was done, marketing and how serviced. I could never get rid of it, I probably will never until the company is running itself.

If you want to see what I do, i'll make you a copy of it.
