I've got an Acer 5920 in with the customer complaining the screen is dim,
the fn+arrow keys for brightness dont seem to be working on it, its also dimmer in the bios etc. the system was in last week to have the dc jack replaced and they seem to think i've made it dim (it was dim when it came in and i've seen these laptops that naturally run like that before)

i've tried a replacement screen and several replacement inverters on it and none seem to make any difference (a one of the new inverters dont light up on it either  ) the other lit up but only as bright as the screen is now....
all of the other fn keys on the laptop seem to work ok, just not the brightness ones?

has anyone got any other ideas???

cheers
Eric

5920 is probably running Vista. Have you tried to adjust the brightness via the display properties? Worked for me yesterday on a Dell where the Fn keys wouldn't.

I'm only guessing, but given that the DC jack was faulty and given that laptops will drop screen brightness when not plugged, is whatever circut that senses the presence of mains power perhaps faulty?

i thought about that too... the customer wanted the dc jack replacing because it felt 'loose' and their charger would not stay in. the laptop still powered up with their jack on - these models dont require soldering as they are on a fly-lead type connection, the screen apears the same on their previous socket too..
i'm stumped, theyve come and collected it (not too happy) and they wouldnt take that the laptop was that bright when they dropped it off with me! :S
