Apologies if this should be in a different section - mods please move if you feel it necessary.

First of all, if any UK techs are looking for something to blow out those dusty computers Aldi have their air compressors back on sale (£89.99) this Thursday, along with accessories HERE. I've got one of these and they're great.

Secondly, I'm thinking of doing DC jack repairs myself instead of farming them out. I have no intention or inclination to do any other board-level repairs, but I reckon DC jacks should be easy enough given the right tools and a reasonable knowledge of soldering/desoldering.

Does anyone have any experience of the following de/soldering stations this one or this one

Most dc jacks dont require any soldering or desoldering. most of them are plug and play. out of probably 30-40 dc jacks I repaired ONLY my own acer needed soldering :/ on the first couple, watch youtube videos for the exact model of laptop and then take on the job..

We still get about 2/3 soldered sockets and 1/3 cable harnesses round these parts.

I've had six jack jobs, only one of which I could do myself because it didn't require soldering, hence the reason why I'm now looking into getting a de/soldering station.

How does that Air Compressor cope with amount of air needed ?

I presume it will be fine blowing out computers no problem ? Will it give a continuous amount of good air, or will you need to wait for the compressor to kick in again before getting enough air to move the dust out ?

Cheers.

It copes well - just switch it on, let it charge the air tank and reach its cutoff, then start blowing out the case. Once the air in the tank drops to a set level the compressor kicks in again but by this point, most of the crud is out and no real need for any more air. I usually end up 'wasting' the excess by blowing spiders out of the corners of the garage :D

Nipped to my local Aldi tonight, but unfortunately they did not have any in.

Spoke to a member of staff and they said there had been a problem with the units being delived, something like a fuse fault ?

He did say they should be in within a couple of weeks though, hopefully the "starter" pack will still be available then.

If you invest in a soldering station, get a hot-air rework station. It is so much easier to remove old jacks than with a soldering iron. If you're cheap and careful, a good heat gun and some aluminum foil heat shielding will work too.

Managed to track one down !

So far so good, appears to fill up quickly will test further tomorrow.

Now just need to look at trying to find some sort of dust extractor, if anyone knows of such device ?

Sorry to hijack the thread !
