Check out this free CD for removing viruses from computer systems. It is called Antivirus Live Cd, and it uses clamav. It has some cool features for technicians. It's free. It can be run from a usb. It will update through ethernet, wifi, or dialup. The software can be used to make an image of an entire windows system and save it on a nas on the network. It can mount these types of partitions: btrfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, FAT, HFS, HFS+, jfs, Minix, NTFS, ReiserFS, and XFS. The cd/usb stick contains also Midnight Commander which can be used as a sort of "dos-like" version of explorer to move files around upon the mounted partition. It even includes "Links" a text based web browser just in case you need to download something but the windows machine itself is too messed up to do it. :) There is definitely an advantage to scanning for viruses outside the windows operating system.

Except that Clam is a terrible AV. Last time I saw it included in an AV comparative (and it's so bad it's no longer even included in them anymore), non-AV like MBAM beat it for virus detection.
In the 1–21 June 2008 test performed by Virus.gr, ClamWin version 0.93 detected 54.68% of all threats and ranked 37th out of 49 products tested; the best scored over 99%.[7]
Granted, that was six years ago but Clam hasn't made any waves at all as far as being more effective since then.
