Wouldn't it be great if... An antivirus company would add a usb product that could be on a write protect usb stick, update itself when plugged in, and boot from and scan a users machine all at a low price renewable easily, that mounts a windows drive and scans it FAAAAAST ?
Such a product would sell like mad to pc repair shops all around the world, yet the big antivirus companies aren't getting the hint that we need it fast, easy, and good. Sure it can be done, but who will do it?
I used to purchase avast u3 edition for my usb stick, and it had a beautiful high tech looking interface, but scanning a pc from that was slooooow as molasses, rendering it effectively ineffective. Then u3 died with sandisks end of product sword striking it squarely in the pontoon boat.
I've been looking at kaspersky b/c they have a free solution, for creating a usb stick, installing their software and scanalizing a pc from usb boot. Anyone have any other RECONemdations for such products?

Unless I am misunderstanding what you are asking for I think we already have a bunch of these. Kaspersky Rescue disk, Hitman pro kickstart, Microsoft offline defender, bitdefender has one and so do others.

ALL will update, mount the drives and scan (fast is a relative term in these cases). I don't think needing a write protected stick is really an issue because if you are booting off the stick then the infected O/S is dormant, but I think all of these will also boot off of DVDs so they are already "write protected" in a sense.

If Iam following this correctly, You want to run scans/updates ect.. from a usb stick? I do this quite a bit from my fedora linux install. I use liveusb-creator to install a bootable cd image on a usb stick from kasperski or whoever.

There are others available depending on your O/S.

How fast is fast?

How much would you be willing to pay for a product like this?

what about something that is not only an antivirus but something that can scan for a virus but also rescue data, passwords and general cleaning?

I used Spotmau Powersuite, Google them because I don't know if I should be posting their link on here..

I'd personally be extremely hesitant in opting for Spotmau. Reading their site, it appears that the product is the bees knees.

However reading the reviews on differing sites, it would appear the complete opposite.

I think Microsoft Security Essential is a good Antivirus.
I also found Safebytes effective too.

USB isn't going to be fast, unless it's 3.0 and even then you have the speed of the fash memory which in most Flash drives is slow. A bootable hdd like a zalman will be faster. An SSD faster still.

But frankly, virus cleaning takes time, which is why I'm doing more nuke and paves.

I've wanted for a long time now to recommend MSE, but the reviews and comments about it have been so inconsistent that I've stopped recommending it for cost-sensitive folks. There are too many top-flight free products out there that get consistent high marks to risk it.

Most of our preferred antivirus brands have such things!
Eset, Kaspersky, BitDefender, Sophos, DrWeb, etc

More often than not, we remove the drive, and slave it in our "bench rig"..and run a ton of different scans from that. Wicked fast right through the SATA bus.
