Customer had a repair done in march, has just come back from a weeks holiday and the screen has fallen off their 27" imac and broken.

Haven't had this happen before.
I assume it was just too much heat as it was left in a room with door shut and curtains/blinds closed, but it does live in front of the window, the screen is also always slightly tilted back (which makes this more odd)

prior to this we worked on the machine last August and no reported issues with the screen between August > March

This is a frustrating one, because it sounds like you're not getting the full story and your customer might be hoping that you'll just fix it for free. Did the repair in March require removing the screen? If so, did you put new adhesive strips on? Did the repair in August require removing the screen? Need more details, but I suppose your choice is either eat the repair cost or lose the customer. I think I'd be voting for the second one.

If you removed the display on the iMac, and didn’t use good VHB adhesive (or it could be faulty?), otherwise it is impossible for the display to just fall off.
Other things you can check is this: are the display cables, that connect to the logic board, damaged? Is there any damage to the logic board connectors? (The ones where the display was plugged in), if the answer is no to both questions then most likely the customer was tinkering with the iMac or another pizza tech was, and in that case you should charge them for the repair

Yep. Something doesn't sound correct here. If the prior work you did involved opening it up then I'm sure you used the proper tape all the way around. In a prior life I had a lot of contact, pun intended, with adhesives. There's no way that'll just "fall" off unless the wrong material was used or the surfaces were not proper cleaned. Have you looked at it? Is there evidence of tampering around the edges? You'd see deformed tape. I'd also bet that the screen cables are damaged as well.

We had this happen a couple years ago one time after a repair, can't 100% say it was us because this customer was causing problems from the beginning. After putting the screen back on with new adhesive, she took it home and then contacted us a couple months later to say the screen fell off. Customer said she was away on vacation, came back and the screen was off. I think she mentioned that it was in her office with the door closed and because they were away, the ac was turned off- sounds like same situation as you! We told her to bring it by the shop, we'll take a look at it and see what we can do. She refused bringing it in and said because of this it forced her to go buy a new one but wanted compensation. Stood our ground on that one because the customer would not bring the imac to us to look at and wouldn't allow one of us to go out to her office either.
We've been buying the adhesive strips from iFixit and haven't had any issues brought to our attention since using these.

This just came to mind as I'm typing, not long after this customer we had another customer come in with an imac and the screen was off. Brand new customer to us and the imac was never serviced anywhere according to the customer. He said he was sitting at the desk typing and saw the screen coming off and caught it before it hit the desk. Lucky for him, the cables weren't damaged so we were able to save that one!

It's really difficult to imagine the screen just falling off, even with less than top quality replacement adhesive. If you've ever removed an iMac screen you know what I mean. They're a bitch to take off. Even after cutting all the adhesive it still doesn't just let go. The cables would seem to keep it from just flopping off. And there's a little ridge at the base of the glass that would hold it in place.

Dog jumps up on table and knocks off iMac. Quick! Blame the tech!

Oh come on. You know it was the cat that did it. They're experts at passing off the blame to others.

As a matter of procedure I don't remove any of the old adhesive until I'm ready to apply the new one and button it up. It's always been more than enough to securely hold it. For the suspenders part I'll also use 3 pieces of painters tape as well.

Fairly sure customer is telling truth. although you can never be 100% sure,
The metal connector for the LCD is bent on the corners on logicboard, and the front of theplastic connector (assume for the backlight) looks like it has been bent slightly.
Fingers crossed that the connectors aren't damaged or it will be even more expense to have the micro soldering guy replace one or both of these.

Both times it came in to us the screen was removed, we have always just used the kits off ebay, but the ones advertised as genuine seem to be only a few quid more so will be using those in future.
I know they aren't genuine, the sellers are just trying to illustrate that they are the foam type like the original, not just adhesive like we have been using.

The original adhesive always seems easier to get into the imac than the stuff we use.

This is what I can't understand either, the screen will sit in without any adhesive at all if it is tilted backwards because of that ridge.
