Lived in Cali long time ago. Couldn't tell you the number of 7-8 year olds who be brought in for a phone with their parents for safety, then I'd get screamed at a month later. Verizon used to offer where you could pick whatever plan (Even top plan) and for first 3 months you'd pay the lowest plan's rate. I would even offer a courtesy call at 2 months to review their usage and then pick them the right plan.Exactly this. My kids carry smartphones, and it has proven to be very helpful in communicating when plans change, when they want to stay after school to watch a school game with friends, to ask whether a friend can come over after school, knock on wood, we haven't had any emergencies but that is the first reason we want to have a phone with them. Of course we do not expect them to use the phone ever during class time, etc.
I can't tell you how many times parents would get ANGRY at me for even SUGGESTING their 8 year old wasn't "Responsible" and how dare I to imply they weren't. Get the base plan, then come back in screaming a month later at their first close to a thousand dollar bill from the kid texting and calling like mad [Edit] at school.
