Apple iOS update retroactively BRICKS repaired iPhones after screen repair!

I must say, I use an iPhone because I like iOS much better than Android, but iPhones really are disposable. I own three iPhones, a 6s+, 7+, and 8+. The 6s+'s battery is pretty well shot. I want to make sure that I get a genuine Apple battery because I don't want some cheapo Chinese knockoff battery to burn my house down, but do you have any idea how difficult Apple makes it to have your phone serviced by them? I thought you could just walk into any Apple store and have it done in 10 minutes. It's a really simple procedure. I've done enough of them to know.

But no, Apple can't be bothered to have a few different types of batteries in stock so they have to order it. Then you have to go into the freaking mall of all places (the only Apple stores by me are all in the mall), drop it off, then pick it up again in a few days. I complained and the guy at the Apple store said they could do a "rush" job for me and if I wanted to walk around the mall for a bit it would be done in about 3.5 hours. 3.5 hours??? I don't even want to spend 3.5 MINUTES in the freaking mall!

Then of course, he suggested that I just buy a new iPhone. I'm not buying another f*cking iPhone. I can't tell the difference between my 6s+ and my 8+ other than the home buttons feel different (a real button vs. a vibrating indent). The only reason why I bought the 7 and the 8 was because I needed to expand my phone fleet, not because I needed an upgrade. I felt like a f*cking idiot in that Apple store, and that's exactly what Apple people are...idiots. They upgrade every time a new model comes out that's basically identical to the old model.

And the iPhone X with it's ridiculous notch and having to memorize gestures...talk about stupid. Though I admit, I might have actually liked the X if they made the home button really small near the bottom, wide and as thick as a toothpick, and if they just made the camera span the length of the phone so there's no stupid notch. Having more screen in a smaller footprint is a good idea, but not at the expense of the notch and not having a button.

I'm really at a loss here. I like iOS, but I don't like the direction they're taking with the hardware. Android sucks big time. Buying an Android phone today is like buying an eMachines in the 90's with all that bloatware and constant glitches and crashes. The only difference is, you can't remove the bloatware and you can't fix the fragmented app ecosystem that causes so many issues. You just have to live with it.

What about the official Google phones? Don't they run stock android?

I love iPhones, I think the design of them is really clever. I love that you can find boardviews, schematics, parts are cheap if you know where to go. They hold their price better than android phones, they update their phones once a year. Samsung update theirs twice. I agree with you that there's little difference, but that's marketing for you. Same thing with the galaxy s6, s7

As someone who works for an Apple ASP, is certified to repair all of their products, and has replaced a LOT of iphone batteries since their $29 program, I can tell you that the batteries that they're sending out are cheapo crap that will burn your house down. We actually had one catch fire yesterday. We've had a countless number of them swell up within days of being replaced and destroy the phone. We've had them right out of the box, from Apple, fail Apple's own diagnostics. These are coming directly from Apple, either on consignment or directly ordered case by case.
Apple doesn't make better stuff. They just spend a lot of money to make people think they do.

Really?! We're an AASP as well and never had any issues with iPhone batteries that are new from Apple.
But I guess it does happen as they are pretty strict on battery safety.

We're an AASP and have all iPhone batteries on consignment stock from Apple, so strange that they have to order them in.
But we also tell customers that we need the iPhone for 4 hours.
It's not really the actual battery replacement that takes the time, it's all of the diagnostics, and paper work required by Apple that makes it add up! :)

@cyabro Just hope they never put an actual Apple store in New Zealand or Apple will make sure all ASP's are no more. That's virtually the only reason you guys can get parts.

If that's the case, my guess is Apple is specifically making crappy batteries specifically for the $29 replacement program so they don't lose so much money replacing them for $29. If this is the case, then I guess I'm stuck buying another new iPhone. F*ck, I freaking HATE Apple!

I hate Apple, but I trust them more than some Chinese seller on eBay selling a counterfeit knockoff battery. Still, the $29 replacement program worries me. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Apple was using cheapo batteries specifically designed just for the $29 replacement program so they don't lose as much money compared to using good quality original replacements.

First one of the day, today, in the attached picture. Brand new battery, manufactured within the last month. From Apple consignment stock.

I'm really getting tired of iPhones.

(UPDATE): Apparently Apple knows about this issue, and it's a software / hardware combo problem. There are steps to fix it..

The Pixel phones do.
No real bloatware either.
I have a Pixel 2 myself, and it's nice that it isn't filled with bloatware crap.

The main reason I went with a Pixel though was to get on Google-Fi. I'm so much happier on Google-FI, it's cheaper and I only get billed for what I use.
