My customer dropped her son's gaming laptop and it hit the ground pretty hard at its backend. After booting, the screen remains completely black. Tried connecting it to an external monitor using a VGA and a DisplayPort cable, but nothing shows on the screen and it says there's no signal. Tried using the FN keys and Windows + P key combo.

I disassembled the laptop and checked cable connections. Everything looks OK.

Upon boot, the keyboard's backlight lights up, I hear some noises (fans, HDD), and I can open and close the optical drive.

There's a lot of broken plastic that came out during the disassembly process. There's dents at the backside so it definitely hit the ground very hard.

What might be the issue? Maybe the motherboard is damaged?

Almost sounds like it fractured a solder joint on the GPU. Sounds a lot like the symptoms of the Nvidia GPU's that were failing in droves in '09 or thereabouts.
