Best way to get @companyname.com email

best way is to buy hosting :) its cheap and with hosting you also get to have a web site and other features that you will use one day.

Yup, Like the others said.
Register a domain yourdomain.com
get some hosting with a control panel where you can create your own e-mail addresses like you@yourdomain.com
Most hosting companies provide you with a control panel, and normally you can access your mail EITHER by setting up an account in outlook or a similar program, or by accessing webmail through a URL like http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail

If you actually want to setup a service like gmail/hotmail you can do this with some PHP scripts so users can register & login @ www.youdomain.com and view their mails there.
There are various scripts that can do this, depending on your budget and required features.

ummm how about gmail with a custom domain?

Yep, if you want a Gmail like experience with your own domain, nothing makes more sense than Google Apps. We use it and love it. Mail, Calendar, Docs and more.

Easy to set up. Just get a domain, sign up for Apps and then make a few DNS changes. Some registrars let you choose Google Apps in the settings and it will configure the MX records for you.

Google Apps (google.com/a) all the way; you can even sign up as a reseller and make 20% on every user you sell/convert. Plus, with it's ability to sync with Android & iPhone devices, it'll help you keep things organized.

As others have already posted, getting an @companyname.com email is just a matter of registering your domain with your registrar of choice. I have been using cheap-domainregistration.com for years as a low cost choice, and have never once had a problem. Most registrars, if not all, include a free email account.

As for avoiding Outlook/Thunderbird etc., a simple gmail account can be configured to poll any POP3 or IMAP account regularly and import the mail to your gmail account. Sending, forwarding etc. can all be configured as needed so your gmail email address is not seen by your customers. I believe this would give you the "gmail experience" with a customdomain.com email address as you are looking for.

What I do not know for sure, is whether or not Google approves of business use in this fashion.

another vote for google apps. purchase a domain main, sign up for google apps, point your mx records to google's servers.

Same experience as gmail.
