Considering getting MCITP or CCNA @ local community college - Is it worth it?

You can spend a lot less and get certified

Certification does not make a lot of difference if you plan to work for yourself but if you want to get a job then it does help. Microsoft partners want to hire Microsoft certified techs because if helps them with their competencies. You can get most of the resources online for free to pass the exam. Experience, buying practice exams and using Technet and MSDN should be all you need. So you should be able to get training and sit an exam for under $300.

If you have a decent computer with lots of memory create some virtual computers using eval copies of windows for trying things out.

After reading this post and one from a few days ago about remote support for home users, just let me fill you in on a few things...to do good home remote support (or for soho/small business), you do not need any certs. You just need to know how to support calls quickly and efficiently (as you can). And of course, start up a well founded locally branded business.

I have no certs, but have made it with good customer support, good troubleshooting skills and quick return time. Certs don't mean you're a good technician. My techs have skils with networking, but no certs.

Make up your mind in where you want to be before you drop any money. Just saying....
