I haven't used a desoldering gun when removing DC Jacks (the hot air makes it so easy for me that I haven't tried) but there are times where you simply couldnt use one.
For example, I replaced a DC Jack on a Dell 1545 a few days ago, the pins do not come above the PCB and the solder is flush with the PCB. Absolutely nothing there for the desoldering gun to attach to or heat up. I am not too sure off hand how to remove it with just a soldering iron. I just thank God I made the purchase for a hot air station when I see them.
