External HD? How big and how is it connected? Older USB2SATA bridges can't properly read large drives, over 2tb if I remember correctly. As far as cloning if the destination is bigger than the source I like Clonezilla as an option. Use it all the time.

So I'm confused. Is the old drive 250gb? Or is it larger and the new drive is a smaller SSD in the caddy? If so clonezilla won't work.

the old drive is 450GB but has 170GB used, the problem I’m facing is the cloning software recognising the external hd, but I’m certain that because it’s w10 and usb 3 porta and the software I’m using is a little old that could be the issue, I’m going to try with another Live os more recent with more recent software
