CPU Fan Failure

I am working on a HP Pavilion. I am getting it set up to sell as a used machine. It is running Vista Home Pre. I thought it could be a nice machine for someone who needs a PC but doesn't have a lot of cash. But when I turn it on, in the BIOS it says "CPU fan failure service to prevent damage press F2 to continue." After I press F2 it runs absolutely normal. The Fan that is on there is a Cool Master so the fan is not factory. Is the fan not sending a signal to the BIOS? I looked in the BIOS settings to turn off the BIOS looking for the fan but there is not place in the BIOS to turn it off. Any ideas?

I was wondering it the power supply may have something to do with it. There is more fan pins right next to the CPU fan pins. I hooked up another fan to run in tandem with the cpu fan and it is barely spinning. Maybe the power is too low coming from the supply.

Did you hit F10 to get to the BIOS? Try Ctrl + F10. This allows access to the hidden options in the BIOS. Some models use different keystrokes so Google it if needed.

Go to the Advanced Tab. You should now see Hardware Monitor at the bottom, click it. Look for System Fan Check. Disable it only if you are positive the CPU fan is fully operational.

Thanks for that info. I disabled it and I still got the same error on start up. I am wondering if the MOBO just isn't bad. I did have to put a video card in it because the VGA on the MOBO is bad. It may have more than you problem.

So what have you done in terms of testing?

I tried three different power supplies, and three different fans, not factory though. I just disables the fan check which didn't work. Like I said before, the VGA connection on the board does not work either. So I think the mobo may be bad. After I press F2, the machine functions as expected. No issues what so ever except the VGA and fan issues.

Try to disable CPU Fan check instead of System Fan Check.

Do the fan speeds and CPU temps look good in the BIOS? How does the fan rotation feel with the power off? Noisy bearings? Good airflow? Maybe throw in another fan. Is the replacement fan plugged into the correct fan port?

Fan rotation is fine. Spins freely. The CPU temp right now is 50 deg C or 122 deg F. I reads CPU Fan Speed and System Fan Speed as 0 RPM.
Fan Control is enabled with Initial\Idle Fan Voltage set to 4.5v. and Fan set to full speed at 62 deg C or 144 deg F.

Is the replacement fan a 3 or 4 wire model? Maybe your mobo has the 4 pin connector and the BIOS is expecting a PWM (speed control) signal from the fan.

You would think disabling the monitoring of the fans in the BIOS would turn off any errors or warnings.

^^^^^This. I'll bet it's a 4-wire connector with a 3-wire fan. If so, get a 4-wire fan and see if the message goes away

It is a four pin fan with four wires, I hooked another four pin fans to it and same error. I also hooked a three pin fan to the three pin next to the cpu fan pins (three pin sys fan). Still gives me error. crazyness I tell ya. o_O

This is crazy. Check the rev of the BIOS. Maybe HP addressed this with a BIOS update?

I understand the desire to fix a problem but for pete's sake, how much effort are you going to invest in this thing? You are already too far in the hole on your labor alone to ever make a profit by selling it. Sometimes recycling is the right thing to do.

Plus, I hate when problems like this sneer at me. It's got nothing to do with whether its' an economic repair--it's personal, and I hate to give up/lose.

Larry,

I suffer from the same affliction but now and again it would be nice if someone tapped me with a 2x4 and saved me from myself.
