Cyberwarfare

I've been watching too many films recently and reading too many articles about Gary McKinnon and it's gotten me thinking about cyberwarfare. Basically, if say, the US/UK/Australia came under cyber attack, what would happen?

They would have aroused the wrath of the great and powerful Ob, and he would throw the magical internet kill switch which would then throw most of the world backwards by 150 years or so. "Pay no attention to that man in the big white house!"

Or . . . if he has the common sense to not use the switch, several thousand geeks around the world would go into motion eradicating the breach, rebooting servers and switches, and thereby saving humanity. All within a few hours. Of course this scenario only works as long as the politicians in said nations keep their greedy, nasty hands out of it.

We all take up computer tech arms and fight it out removing infection after infection as a Cyber Warrior of sorts.

That would be awesome. Imagine every dame in the nation waving her handkerchief at you shrieking "You're my hero, computer warrior!"

... Wait, oh yeah, I'm married.

This cyber attack between the US, the UK and Australia would never happen.

lol. Good to know you have some wishful thinking there unless I am misreading the sarcasm.

Either way, I don't know what exactly would happen, but I am sure the US Government already has procedures and methods in place to hack into other government systems and are most likely actively doing it. Ally or not.

The DoD and NSA have competitions to find smart hacker talent.

I think a few people are reading this wrong.

It original post says what if the 3 countries "came under attack" not attacked each other. "Came under attack" implies an attack from a country other than those 3.

lol

This is actually going on now, if my brain is working right, The Pentagon is constantly under attack from people trying to hack into their systems. I think back in November of 08 they actually had some 200 machines go off line.

I also remember seeing a thing that the Head of Cyber defense or what ever he is, was looking programmers and engineers with some crazy certs and experiance needed. And they had to dumb it down since like only 3 people in america actually had the minimum or something.

Hmmmm. You'd probably have to ask someone like Howard Schmidt. He's the chief cyber security expert for President Obama.

There used to be a group in section J-5 of the pentagon called s.t.o.d. for special tactical operations division, and they were doing a ton of 'offensive hacking'. However, If you remember back to when the pentagon was hit hard by terrorists... Anyway.

s.t.o.d. tries to be more secretive than cia an nsa combined. little of their operational objectives is classified lower than ts. good luck finding anything out about them.

cybersecurity in the u.s.a. has been really awful. we see the head of all the intel agencies ( a new position created by bush ) complaining that foreign hackers got everything we have. from secret weapons and lab research to lists that compromise identity.

finally... hasn't it already happened here: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5578986n

Mike McConnel said it already happened he was the U.S. National Intelligence Chief, a position created by bush over nsa, cia, and dia. He's in that cbsnews clip above telling it all.

Re:

I really doubt that the US, the UK or Australia will ever attack each other. The attacks, usually come mostly from Asia ( I am thinking China) and Eastern Europe (Russia). There are attacks from every country on our infrastructure, but there are just cyber attacks or attempts at hacks. I am sure every country registers cyber attacks of some level.
These 3 countries are allies, the possibility of a cyber war is very small.
The US is mostly concerned about Russian and Chinese servers.

Did you not even read this entire thread. They already stated that is exactly what they are not talking about in the thread.

Please re-read and edit your post accordingly.

Cyber attack may cause some damage, correct.
But the attackers would be as exposed as the attacked.
This is just a cat & mouse game, very similar to the cold war.
If you nuke us we nuke you. Same ****.

But what you need to be worried about is the current Sun Brightest Cycle which is reaching it's high level and it is predicted to be 50% stronger than all the other cycles since the records began more than 100 years ago or so. And that will be reached around the year 2013.
That can cause repeated bombardment of the Earth with electromagnetic waves, and booom, no damn computer will work. All fried, Kentucky style if you wish. Just add ketch-up and french fries.
Visit the NASA official website for more info into this.

No cahs registers, no ATM machines, no electronic sparking system in your car, no electronic equipment in planes, trains, and the whole f**g thing.

Funny thing is 100 years to us sounds like a long time but that is nothing when you look at the history of the earth. I am not at all worried about this. Plus what does 50% stronger mean anyway and when was the last strongest level.... last week, last year, 99 years ago?

This just sounds like one of those articles or stories that have no real data that can be tied to anything.

Example
Computer virus infections are up 200% over previous years! Wow that sucks right. Well, if you are comparing to the 1980's then not really becasue there might be a 1000% more computers.
