Dell Inspiron 2330 All in One stuck on Dell logo

Thought I was dealing with a run of the mill hard drive replacement.

Dell on-board diagnostics tells me:

Error Code 2000-0142
Validation 86264
Hard drive 0 Short test unsuccessful

Error Code 2000-0511
Validation 93403
Fan - The [CPU FAN] failed to respond correctly

Everything else tested OK. Took fan out and cleaned it. It seemed to spin freely. Saw it running when installed. Didn't think too much of it. Maybe I'll replace it, maybe not.

Install new SSD. Boot from iODD and restore a Windows 7 image to the new SSD. Shut the machine down, pull out the iODD. Turn it back on.

It won't go past the Dell logo screen. I see the Dell logo, the Energy Star logo, the F2 and F12 reminders for Setup and Boot Options. The blue progress bar does not progress, it's at 100% as soon as its turned on.

When it first happened I think I was able to hit F12 and that choice was highlighted, but it didn't take me to a boot menu. (Note that all that worked flawlessly before I installed the new SSD and it worked after I installed the SSD, but quit when I tried to boot Windows from the newly restored image)

I've disconnected the new SSD and the optical drive. I've removed RAM modules and tried just one. I cleared CMOS (by holding down power button with it unplugged for 15 seconds, then pulled CMOS battery and held for an additional 30 seconds).

No matter what I do it turns on and sticks on that screen.

I tested the hard drive in another system. SeaTools reports "Short DST - FAIL". But SMART and other tests pass.

Except for the CPU fan error, everything was working "fine" until I imaged the new SSD and rebooted. Wonder if I could have caused an issue by pulling the USB plug to the iODD before the machine had powered down / rebooted?

Ugh, it's been a long day. Is the motherboard really dead? Is there something I'm overlooking / not seeing?

Sounds like a bad image - have you tried reimaging with another known working image
Clean the disk with Diskpart - then try and reinstall.

I can't get past the POST screen. Normally when you press F12 you'll get a boot menu. You'll also see progress bar movement. I get this screen but F2 and F12 have no effect. I HAVE DISCONNECTED THE INTERNAL HARD DRIVE. No drives connected to the system at all.

This what I see:

yea I have found a bad image can do that - as cant reach bootsector. It wont do anything with drives disconnected as cant find them.

Can you try another HDD to test - as might be a firmware issue with SSD and Dell
Used another KB? If not might be bad luck and is a MB issue.

Hmmm... I recall a similar issue with a Dell XPS 13 laptop. I think I posted about that here.

I'm going to hook up the original drive and see what I get.

Hooked up the original drive. Only change is that I can get the "F12 Boot Options" text to light up if I press F12. Couldn't do that before. That text will light up when the system has recognized that you've pressed the key. On a working system you'll soon see your boot choices.

I did a CMOS reset along the way with the SW50 jumper.

Tried a different keyboard.

Should note: I never put the back panel on the machine again. I was able to boot from my iODD USB virtual CD ROM that I used to restore an image to the new SSD. I looked all around and don't see any kind of chassis intrusion prevention switches, so I highly doubt that's the issue.

Also disconnected the power and SATA cables from the motherboard.

If the firmware / BIOS on the mobo is somehow corrupt, I don't know how to reset it. I'm thinking this one is toast.

One more thing: see the thermal paste where it doesn't belong?

I don't know if it came from the factory like that or some pizza tech had this thing apart.

i would take it at this point as MB failure - new system. No use friggin around - they are running Win 7 and need to update. You have wasted too much time on it.

just an observation, didn't you say you removed RAM Modules - you would have noticed that.

With no drives connected and it sitting on the splash screen then it's some kind of hardware fault or BIOS issue.

Make sure to physically look in each USB port to make sure none of them are damaged. I've had bent pins cause this issue.
I was excited by your idea. I've seen that too in the past. Also seen it where a USB connected printer that had a memory card reader would cause a system to hang on boot. Unfortunately in this case all the pins look fine.

I don't think you're going to narrow this down.

Obviously it's a board issue, but unfortunately it could be a faulty sensor or cap near the cpu fan, or simply a faulty bios.

If you have a bios programmer I would desolder the bios chip and flash a fresh bios. Failing that, without schematics it's board replacement time.

Yep, I don't do board level repairs. Already ordered a "new" board off eBay for $109. Customer has already ordered a new system, but since I've got the thing almost 100% apart I have to fix it :D

Guess the client wants to have 2 systems?
No, he gave me the old system.

Installing the new board tonight, taking a break to eat. Here's what the thermal paste looks like:

Do they actually leave the factory looking like that? Or did that happen at Office Depot?
