Dell Studio 1537 - MediaDirect button as power switch

I'm working on an older Dell 1537.

The power button was smashed in, which is mounted on the end of the hinge. This is a very "delicate" setup, meaning there is not much to support it in that area. I repositioned the switch in its' holder, but it will not power on with the power button.

The wires are intact & do not appear to be broken.

I stumbled across a site that mentioned using the MediaDirect button as power switch to turn it on. I pressed the MediaDirect button and it started up like a charm.

Anyone see any problem with not replacing the hinge power button & just using the MediaDirect button long term as the power switch?

This is a spare pc for the kids to use, so they don't want to sink a lot into repairs on it.

I think you've answered your own question.

Let's break it down:

  2. . . . repositioned the switch in its' holder, but it will not power on with the power button . . .
  3. . . . pressed the MediaDirect button and it started up like a charm . . .
  4. . . . spare pc for the kids . . .
  5. . . . don't want to sink a lot into repairs . . .

You need to be confident in your recommendations. You already reached your conclusion before you posted. Roll with it.

I was mainly concerned with using the Media Direct utility as a start up solution. I don't really have any experience with that, and I don't know if it is a stable solution or if it would turn out to be buggy.

As long as Media Direct is stable, then it works for me (and the client).
