Determining Correct Memory For ProLiant ML115

I'm upgrading the memory on a HP ProLiant ML115 server for a client so I went out onsite today to figure out what kind of memory he needed. I figured I would make note of the model number and look up the specs since I couldn't power down the machine to pop out the memory today.

Looking on the front of the case it had the standard ML115 stamp but on the side panel there were instructions for the G5 model.

I made note of the processor within Windows so I could go back into the specs later to see which model he actually had. It turns out he had the processor for the standard ML115 model not the G5. (AMD Opteron 1214)

According to HP's Specs, the AMD Opteron 1214 CPU supports PC2-5300 but according to this Wikipedia page, that processor only supports PC2-6400 memory (The same memory you see in the G5)

How do I determine the correct memory to buy based on the only solid piece of info that I have? (CPU)

What memory vendor do you purchase from?
We use Crucial, and their guide shows that Presario/Pavilion ML115 model server takes both 5300 and 6400..and they recommend 6400.
As you know, faster speeds will default to lower speeds if needed.

Also to double confirm which you want, just run their memory advisor tool on the server...let it "sniff" the server and tell you what's in there.

(yes I know it's a Proliant...but I call the ML100 series presarios...)

You can go to partsurfer.hp.com and plug in the serial number to see what the machine shipped with. You can also plug in the HP part number as well, it should be something like 457772-031 but the serial is more accurate.

As YSC said you can go to the major RAM vendors and they will have the compatible options listed. I'm a fan of crucial as well.

Ah, I see. I guess I was concerned that these 2 memory types fit different slots but they're both 240 pin.

So would it be a safe bet just to purchase the fastest RAM of the two and worst case scenario the speeds just get clocked down?

Thanks for the responses.

Based on the info we have on hand from HP, the ML115 G5 will accept two types:

1GB DDR2-800 - HP spare # 450259-B21
2GB DDR2-800 - HP spare # 450260-B21

It has four DIMM slots, so maximum 8GB (4x2GB).

We don't appear to have any in stock at the moment, but we might be able to source some for you. PM to discuss.
