I am thinking about purchasing Macrium Reflect Standard to backup Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server 2005.
Does this backup software allow me to restore to dissimilar hardware?

Macrium does have a product call "Macrium ReDeploy" but it doesn't support servers just yet. You could use something like Paragon Adaptive Restore 2010.

Macrium ReDeploy https://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-softsell.cgi?item=17447-12&ss_long_order=true&currency=USD

Paragon Adaptive Restore http://www.paragon-software.com/business/adaptiverestore/

I've used Paragon's Adaptive Restore and it worked without a problem.
I can't find a price for the Paragon Adaptive Restore.

Also, I assume that Acronis True Image Home 2010 (or 2011) with Universal Restore would not be able to backup and do a dissimilar restore for Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2005, correct?

EDIT: For Acronis True Image Home 2010 ... I am referring to backing-up and restoring from their recovery CD (not with the operating system running).

StorageCraft have "hardware independent restore" which is supposed to be an extremely good product

Acronis have Universal Restore

Theres also a bunch of Microsoft solutions which are very flexible and robust (and free)

Just to make sure that we are on the same wavelength can you please verify that ....
You are saying that Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Universal Restore can do the following:
- Boot off the Acronis Recovery CD (which has Universal Restore)
- Image the disk which is Windows Server running SQL Server
- Restore the image to dissimilar hardware while booting off the Acronis Recovery CD?

Thanks!

Adaptive Restore is part of other products - you can't buy it on its own as far as I can tell. I think it's included in pretty much every pro product they do.

I'd also like to know if these work for servers. I might be about to find out actually since I need to replace the mobo on a server. In theory it sounds like it should work to me because it replaces drivers like the HDC and many server drivers are the same as their workstation counterparts.

Acronis and Paragon HOME products will NOT work on a server, they detect its a server and wont continue. Both companies do server equivalents albeit a damn site more expensive!

I subscribe to both TechNet and MAPS.
Which MS solution are you referring to?

todo backup is also a years' quality tool, works well with server 2003 and server 2008, and easy-to-use interface makes all easy to understand
by the way, i know todo backup allows 15 days trial, reliable one
and what's more, if you are small business users, its price will be more acceptable.
so i vote for todo backup
I will do some research on this software.
Thank you.
