I have a client with an older HP consumer laptop, Windows 10 Home, who upgraded to an SSD this summer in order to try to prolong the life of her laptop. She's decided for any number of reasons that it's time to retire the laptop, but she wants to keep the SSD. She wants me to find a value system for her that will be better quality than her HP consumer grade laptop, so I'm recommending she purchase something from the Dell Business Outlet with a spinner and I'll install the SSD for her.
There are a few systems in the Outlet with Home licenses, but the majority of them are Pro licenses. In order to keep costs down for this client, I'd prefer to just remove the drive from the old system and install it in the new one.
I've had good luck simply swapping a drive with Windows 10 on it from one system with the same "flavor" of Windows to another - Windows and I together do a good job finding any drivers that need to be changed, and the license activates without a hitch. I'm quite sure you can't put a drive with Win 10 Pro into a system with a digital entitlement to Home, but what happens if you go the other way? Can I then do an in-place upgrade to Pro?
I know it's the cheater way to do it, and I can certainly do it the "right" way, but I'd love to go this easy route if I can. Any insights from anybody who's done this before would be appreciated!
