Only serious helpful advise please guys, gaps in my knowledge are obvious, I am not the worlds greatest tech but don't need that spelled out to me in any elitist way which can happen here from time to time.
If I was looking for sarcasm I would have asked for help at www.techriddicule.com. :p
All that being said, thank you in advance for taking the time to help me in my hour of need.

I have searched the net for a solution to this problem for the last 2 days to no avail. I have searched google, HP Compaq websites, everywhere.

OK down to business. This was a simple job, virus removal, a service, and DVD drive replacement. (Intro: Eerie music).

Specs for HP Compaq V3700 laptop. Actual model is V3744AU

AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-58,
1.9 GHz, 512KB+512KB L2 Cache
MEMORY : 2048MB DDR2 (2 Dimms), upgradeable to 4GB
CHIPSET : Nvidia MCP67M chipset GeForce 7150M Graphics with up to 128mb shared.
STORAGE : 160GB 5400RPM HDD
OPTICAL DEVICE : Super Multi 8X DVDRW with Double Layer Support
DISPLAY : 14" WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen Display
CAMERA : Integrated HP Low Light VGA Webcam
OS : Windows Vista Home Premium. SP2

My steps leading up to current issue...

1. Gave full service and removed viruses, DVDRW was not detected as expected as client had told me that it did not work any-more.
2. Checked for device conflicts, but not listed in device manager as DVDRW except as an unknown IDE device.
3. Each time system boots "Found New Hardware" discovers DVDRW as unknown device but will not install drivers nor detect it as IDE DVDRW. VHP should auto detect I know and no drivers should be needed I know.
4. Looked for and reinstalled all original vendor software/drivers/disk writting programs to coax system into detecting DVDRW. No luck.
5. Checked websites and found that this issue is a very common one that a well known fix is removing the upper and lower filters from the registry (It does not apply to this problem). Also removing iTunes, nope. Using a script to remove traces left by removing other previously installed audio programs which cause a failure to detect the DVDRW unit. No luck again.
6. I created a new multi string value (adding "LowerFilter" with the value data "PxHelp20") at 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 in the registry and restarted, No luck.
7. This issue has happened to not only this model but also the v6000 series
8. At this point in time, 3-5 hours of investigation later... you just know I am losing money every minute that goes by and this isn't solved.
9. I even ran sfc /scannow now as the last desperate hope of a fading tech. No luck.
10. Ran a few MS "Fixits" :o No luck.
11. A re-installation has been attempted by others with this same problem but most have just had it return or have given up and use an external drive. The other instances were with systems both old and relatively new in age, the only common ground is they are HP laptops.
12. I am at my wits end here and am thinking of doing the unthinkable and giving up. Are there any bright innovative minds or just someone who has solved this issue before?

HP have known about this for over a year but as of yet have supplied no fix for it.

Thanks in advance.

Have you look in the bios yet to see if it shows up?What does show up in the bios when you look?Have you check the dvdrw drive to make sure that it was not recalled? And have you check the dvdrw drive to see if it works? Hook up the drive to another computer.

Hi Pete, hope your keeping well.

Sounds like you have covered all the bases. I would try another DVD drive in it's place as it sounds to me as though the drive has failed. No point wating more time if a new drive solves the issue.

Is the device correctly identified in the BIOS? Even if it is, it could still be faulty.

Hi there, hows it going TLE? Good to see your still around :-).

Yes cooltech sure, have checked the BIOS, it has a Phoenix Bios with the only recognition of any device is being able to select DVD drive in the boot order.

No HDD optical or otherwise is mentioned or shown. I am loathe to update the BIOS just yet simply because of the potential for Murphy's law to kick in and something else to go wrong when I am ready to take a few days off on holiday.

There are registry keys that roxio sometimes creates that do need to be deleted as they cause dvd drives not to work. I do not want to spend hours and hours on this one job.

I have tried two other drives both with the same IDE connection without any joy and the replacement Optical is a recognised replacement model. The Super Multi Drive Model GSA-T10N does have a history of screwing up. The replacement is a UJ-851 DVD?RW DL Notebook IDE Drive!

In here lies the dilemna, what to do. This is the point I rely on you for inspiration TLE ;)

I am thinking its either a cable or the motherboard, neither a happy option.

does the m/b have any sata connections? if so i would try plugging in a sata drive in and seeing if that works. or the easiest thing switch ide cables (if you don't have any laying around just switch the hard-drive and dvd cables and see what happens)

for holeshotelectronics

Hi, I am fairly sure the IDE connector is soldered onto the laptop MB and I don't have the time to open it up and find out.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

that's my bad i was quick reading your 1st post and didn't realize that it was a laptop...sorry about that its been a very long day lol
its sounding more like a motherboard issue he could always use a usb dvd drive if he doesn't want to replace the board

Thanks.

Yes, that seems to be where this is heading, an external Optical is probably the only real alternative, I just don't feel right not solving what comes through my door, I take it personally when I cannot sort it out.
Thanks for your time anyway, the client is picking it up tonight so its almost time for the fat lady to sing on this one.

Have you tried reinstalling the chipset?

Also, for giggles, see if a USB drive works.

My guess if it does not read it, or any drive, but reads something in windows, sounds like a bad cable. If there is a cable for that model. I can get you this motherboard, or cable if your interested pm me.

Topic Closed, thanks for your help but system back with owner.

Thanks again but the owner now has possession of the laptop so all points would be pointless :).
