I have a client that just emailed me regarding a LACie external hd connected to a pvr When he powers it up it beeps 3 high tones then 3 at a lower tone then again 3 high and so on.
He swapped out the usb and the power cord with same results. He hooked it up to his computer and the computer does not recognize it.
LACie web site has nothing regarding beep codes, since I don't think LaCie make drives, and likely sources from a variety of suppliers as pricing and other market factors dictate. I'm sure they prefer to leave it ambiguous.
If my Linux machine sees the HD,, I will try to clone it first.
I've just never heard of a HD beeping, must be a buzzer on the board?

No Lacie enclosure beeps that I know of. The beeping can definitely be caused by a hard drive. Maxtor if I had to guess. Open enclosure and see what's in there.

Thanks, he will be dropping the unit off tomorrow, and I will take a good look at it, and update this thread.
I was just curious and their website has no info on error or beep codes.

Yup, those are not beep codes. Instead, that is a bad sound from the hard drive caused by the head movement.
This. I had a client ruin his chances of data recovery because he mistook a high pitch whine as a beep. He kept trying to access the drive long before he contacted me.

Yep, seen plenty of failed LaCie's and not a single one was beeping. But plenty of other noises if the failed drives were spinning up.
