Finally finished my landing page design after a few weeks work:

I designed the layout utilizing the 960 grid system for web layouts. I had Jim's article on turbo charging your website's sales potential in mind too: link

I've been reading these web design blogs for a couple years, so were a huge help as well if anyone's interested:

smashing magazine
webdesignerwall
noupe
dribbble

I plan on beginning the coding and subpage design sometime next week, and using wordpress as a platform. I'm thinking of keeping a design journal and posting it here if enough people are interested.

Let me know what you guys think!

Edit 4/25 - Here's a slightly modified version based on suggestions below:

5/3 Update:
Here's what I've accomplished so far, coming along nicely:

It's timing out for me...........

Great design man!
Good use of color, good call to actions.
Interesting place to put the menu.
i love it.

Would definetley like to see the follow up pages.
And i would like to follow your journal.

Aesthetically it's a very nice page. My only concern is that it looks like form the screenshots that their is a lot of text on the page; if possible I'd try and make the phone number a bit bigger just to it's blindingly obvious

Its a winner.

I like it, and I think it will be very effective.

Really an excellent design.

The only minor criticisim I have is that the two calls to action dont allow for discussion.

Punters have the opportunity to 'schedule' or 'try'. I think this is limiting in regard to the fact that some people won't want to do either without talking to you first and having any concerns met or questions answered.

Imagine an auto services site. You don't know the provider, and are looking for a tune up. You see the service there, it looks good. What do you want to do next?

(a) phone them to discuss and work out an appointment if the service does what you need it to
(b) schedule the service based on the information on the page

Personally, I would want to ring them, as I would feel more comfortable making a booking after speaking to a human.

I think 'try' is good. I think 'schedule' would be better as 'find out more'

I assume this will then lead into the service page, and will then allow a more specific (broad) call to action such as 'phone now!'.

Most people will be happy to phone you to discuss. "schedule" is a bit rigid as it doesnt give the punter enough time to consolidate their buying impulse (which will 9/10 times occur in a phone conversation with you).

Hope this makes sense.

But in terms of the format, I think its an excellent piece of work. Looks like you have done your research, and understand what the important elements of a good landing page are :)

Well done! :D

Thanks. I was originally going for the color of the logo in my avatar and a gray, but I eventually opted for the green/black combo which is a little more distinct and stands out better imo

Glad you're interested in the journal idea. I'll try documenting as many major changes and any sources for inspiration I find as I'm working on it and post a new thread in website development

Having too much text was definitely a concern for me, especially around the mid section. I tried to aim for making everything as functional and effective as possible but I may tinker around with it a bit and reduce the number of bullet points or something. and add a learn more link so as not to overwhelm

Now that you mention it, the schedule does seem a bit forward at this point in the customer's browsing experience, and would likely be more appropriate on an inner page.

I plan on designing an overall services page that lists all services offered as excerpts similar to the mid section of the page. And within each excerpt a link that leads to a very detailed service overview page for each service where the 'schedule' button should probably be, as well as a contact form.

Haha, thinking about it in this context, althought a bit offensive, it helps to think of potential clients as sheep and ourselves as the shepherds. It's our job is to alleviate any doubts or uncertainties they may have and help them determine if our services are right for them by means of effective and efficient advertising. 'Schedule' at this point is akin to running at them on all fours barking mad, telling them what to do. :D

Exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. Thanks, and glad you like it!

If you can get that design running with WP, I'd be tempted to install it myself.

Is it your own design or an adaptation?

Designed everything myself. Used Adobe Fireworks, the 960 grid system to help keep everything aligned, and took a lot of helpful advice into consideration.

As of right now I just plan on modifying the default theme to suit my own needs, but I'm also reading up on how to create custom themes in the future.

I think you managed to make a very professional weblayout there. Will you really use it for a project?
