Firefox compatibility issues

I haven't run across compatibility issues with a browser in a very long time until today. I use Firefox as my day-to-day browser and I tried three times to renew my license plates online with the Wisconsin DMV and every time it failed after submitting the payment information (PayPal and two different credit cards). I called the DMV and after passing me around they ended up clueless but with the suggestion to try a different browser as last resort. She said they use Edge(?). I haven't run up against this kind of problem in so long that I didn't even think about a different browser. I then tried Chrome and everything worked as it was supposed to and the transaction went right through.

I guess this is just an FYI to all that these issues still exist.

I see it with niche applications that are web based or have a heavy web based interface particularly in government services. I am surprised the answer was Edge most things I see now with this the answer is Chrome.

Not that I'm doubting the story presented, but it's got to be something about how the Wisconsin DMV interfaces with those payment services. Heaven only knows how many PayPal transactions are made using Firefox each day just for eBay payments and I've done direct CC payment through other services using Firefox on many occasions.

It's an issue and it happened using Firefox, but I doubt that the folks at Mozilla will be responsible for the fix.

If there's one thing I've learned in my now almost decade and a half working with individuals who are blind it's that you always need to have a "secondary browser" because, invariably, certain sites will not "play well" with one browser but do with another. It's becoming a far less frequent occurrence, but it's never gone away. The same is true sometimes for the same website in the same browser but with a different screen reader, too. Any "technological layer" can end up being at fault.

Potatoe, po-tah-to. Most Chromium-based browsers will behave in the same way as Chrome does.

I often say Edge simply because I know it comes with Windows, and it's handy to avoid any need to install another browser for a one-off (or very nearly so) kind of situation.

[And, yes, I know how virtually ubiquitous Chrome is, but since I don't use it . . .]

Yeah, I get these, too. Too bad there isn't an easy way to switch browsers based on the URL. That would save me time and frustration after trying to get FireFox to work, getting to the check-out page and having to start over in Edge.

I find that with Firefox, any ad-blocking extensions installed cause this.

All the time? I've had uBlock Origin in Firefox for years and never had a PayPal payment I initiate from Firefox fail.

I have had things fail in Brave, though, because it is very aggressive in what it blocks, and when it comes to either online banking or payment services, very often some third-party cookie that's necessary is being blocked.

True but usually someone says Chrome regardless of if Chromium is really all they mean

Yeah I forget about ad-block and such I know I run into issues with Brave usually due to the ad blocking not so much a real browser incompatibility but when it is an issue I switch browser to one that has less blocks set or has prompts for unblocking so I don't have to change my configs regularly.

Firefox is now the odd man out with its own rendering engine. Everything else that people use is Chromium, and yes... it does cause integration issues from time to time.

It's relatively rare though, certainly several orders of magnitude more rare than what we used to run into with IE vs Netscape back in the day.

But those mentioning plugins are also correct, because I too use Firefox as my daily browser and it's got plugins up one side and down the other to defend me in various ways as well as accelerate my research capabilities. These plugins do break things.

I keep Edge fairly clean, just ublock. And use it in cases where something goes wrong. Chrome is installed, but in a GPT enabled world its translation features are no longer required. I'm seriously considering removing it entirely.

I've got Librewolf locked down tight.

I use uBlock Origin, Decentraleyes, ClearURL's, UnTrackME, Opt-Out-for-Analytics and a couple of other extensions. I have Quad9 (Malware Blocking) selected in the "Privacy and Security section" also.

I don't have these issues with my bank, car registration, insurance or any other site.

I use Edge as primary and Opera as my secondary browser. Edge is loaded up with extensions like uBlock but I leave Opera pristine.

Browsers are sort of like running a wholly separate OS inside a container. There's always the potential for weird behavior. It's way, way better than it used to be though.

I used and loved Opera.
You do know Opera is now owned by Qihoo 360 yeah? Although Opera is still headquartered in Norway being essentially owned by a Chinese company doesn't sit well with me.
I have serious privacy concerns about what was once my favourite browser. (As do many others)

No I did not know! I avoid Chinese software so Opera is getting removed right after I type this!
