Gaming system advice needed.

It has been three years since I built a gaming system, probably 4 since I really kept up with the latest video cards. I need to update a friends gaming system because the current card is showing its age. Black Ops 3 is only getting 40fps at 1080p, so it's time for an upgrade. The budget needs to be around $200 to $300 if possible, I know the power supply may need upgrading depending on the card. Budget may have to go up.

Current System :

AMD A10-6800K 4.1GHz
8GB DDR3 1600
AMD HD7770 2gb
600 Watt Corsair

GTX960 should fill the bill; if budget and PSU will tolerate it, the GTX970 would be a better choice, IMO....

If on a budget i'll recommend you looking at the newer Radeon cards, they have impressive performance for the money, but with a cost of more wattage. (not much - 960 @ 120 tdp vs 380x @ 190 but still a drawback)

If on a budget i'll recommend you looking at the newer Radeon cards, they have impressive performance for the money, but with a cost of more wattage. (not much - 960 @ 120 tdp vs 380x @ 190 but still a drawback)

I went with the R9 380 and a power supply upgrade. This is the card I bought.

It's not for me. I built a gaming system for a friend several years ago and he wanted to upgrade. I just don't keep up with that anymore. That card and the A10 will hopefully get him high settings on Black Ops 3.

I've got an older 3gb radeon 7950 should be similar in performance, and it's still playing all my new titles fine. Thing to be concerned about moving forward, not sure how much of a bottleneck that a10 may be later.

That will probably be his next upgrade, a new cpu and motherboard. He has the top A10 now.

In that case, if it's performing ok, I'd hold off till next year. Word is that AMD is releasing a new line of CPU's called zen sometime in 2016. They are saying they expect a 40% performance boost, but of course take that with a grain of salt until real numbers come out. But might be worth seeing what those look like in price/performance vs the intel offerings at the time.
